You can't get a graduate in geography come straight out of uni and expect them to know job just cause of their qualification. :mad :mad
We've got a postman with a degree in Geography. I know one thing. If I had the wit to get to university, I wouldn't be shovelling unwanted crap through letterboxes. What a waste!

So isnt walk sorting a skill anymore, that had to be learned, i get really fed up with people saying we are paid well for what we do, Tommos right RM have devalued this job, ive done this job when no f***er wanted it, because the pay was so low, at my job interview the bosses on the panel said to me, the pays really low but theres loads of overtime if you want it, you can live here if you want to, our pay might seem alright to some but its only because theyve added all the different allowances into the basic pay, and i can tell you there is now and probably more so in the past, jobs that were unskilled and did not have as much responsability, that were paid a hell of a lot more than we are, we are NOT WELL PAID, ive done nearly all aspects of this job and ive had to learn them, the trouble is now is a lot of people come into the job pick a bag of mail up and go out and deliver it, and they think thats it, ask anyone whos been on here more than 15 years if think we are well paid...UNITY IS STRENGTH.

I can only speak for that which I know about folks. You are right Tommo. I had the proper training when I joined, had to pass a proper sorting test before being allowed to do sorting overtime. I was actually shown a delivery by the regular posty before doing it. Never see that happen now.
After the recent 20 odd EVR's we had at our place recently, they've realised that they're, oh, 20 odd people down to cover the duties. I've seen 4 or 5 people who don't have enough of a grasp of the English language to do the job properly. Yet they're not only doing deliveries without any proper training, they're also allowed to do cut offs  Some finishing well into the early evening.
Nowadays all royal mule want as delivery posties are willing pack horses who say yes to any stupid suggestion the managers ask of them. They can do the job. But not to a high enough standard in my book. But with royal fail it's quantity not quality these days.

When i joined 1984, you were respected by the public!!
People were fighting to get into the job and it was well paid!! Plus it was an easy life ( three bundles on a walk) out at 6.30
f**K me whats happened, we are donkeys and the public think we are the lowest of the low.

cornishrep, mate i think the wage in 84 was £86 a week i took a drop in pay to work for RM, my pay as a milkman, another unskilled job was £130, but i took the job because i thought it was a secure job, and i dont know about being easier i think i must have been doing the wrong walks, or the boss didnt like me, but you are right, you were respected, i used to feel pride and satisfaction that i had got peoples mail to them on time, but not anymore, them two boneheads have totally devalued the job, theres no pride in what we do anymore...UNITY IS STRENGTH.

I'M SICK TO DEATH OF PEOPLE GOING ON ABOUT SOME GUY'S FINISHING WALKS EARLY. WHY CANT YOU TWAT'S GET IT THROUGH YOUR THICK SKULL'S THAT SOME PEOPLE MOVE FASTER THAN OTHER'S. IF WE TAKE YOUR WARPED LOGIC TO IT'S ULTIMATE CONCLUSION WE'D BETTER START LOADING UP TOP CLASS RUNNERS WITH LEAD BECAUSE THEY FINISH THE RACE QUICKER THAN THE OTHER'S. IF YOU PLAN A WALK TO THE LEVEL OF THE QUICKER BLOKES THEN THE OTHER POOR SWINES WILL BE MOANING THAT THEY CANT GET IT DONE, AND IT'S NOT A MATTER OF PEOPLE DELIBERATELY RUSHING AROUND. I'M WELL OVER 6 FOOT AND EVEN AT MY f***ing OLD AGE I GET THE WIFE CONSTANTLY TELLING ME TO SLOW DOWN WHEN WE ARE OUT. THE FACT IS PEOPLE HAVE MOANED ABOUT THIS SINCE I STARTED IN 68 THEY JUST HATE IT CAUSE THEY CANT MOVE AS QUICK AS OTHER'S. IV'E EVEN HAD BLOKE'S DO WALKS IV'E HAD AND TAKE AN HOUR MORE THAN ME.SO GET USED TO IT AND GET OVER IT. PS TOMMO IT'S MY BITHDAY TO-DAY :dance :dance :dance ANOTHER YEAR NEARER THE GRAVE

What a load of f***ing bollocks!!!
So a walk that takes 2 hours less than mine is soley down to the person doing it being quicker than I am. Don't make me f***ing laugh!
Most walks I did when I wasn't on a regular one I did in the same time as the regular man or quicker. It's you who needs to wake up and smell what you're shoveling!
People do have their own speeds. But that does NOT account for the huge differences between walks. I've done walks that take 2 hours and others that take 4. So if it's down to the speed of the individual, how do you account for that?

KINMADFORIT AS YOU HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS DO TELL US ALL HOW DO YOU MAKE ALL THE WALKS TAKE THE SAME TIME REGARDLESS OF WHO IS DOING THEM. COULD YOU ALSO EXPLAIN WHY TWO PEOPLE CAN HAVE A DIFFERANCE OF ONE -TWO HOURS THROWING OUT THE SAME WALK. IF THATS NOT DOWN TO THE PERSON THEN WHAT IS. DO TELL I'M ALL EAR'S. PS IF YOU HAVE WALKS TAKING 4 HOURS THEN YOU AND YOUR MANAGERS DONT KNOW THIER OWN RULES. AFTER 3.5 HOURS YOU ARE ENTITLED TO GO BACK TO YOUR OFFICE EVEN IF YOU ARE INSIDE YOUR TIME AND THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT .IT'S ALREADY BEEN CHALLENGED ON H&S GROUNDS AND RM LOST.

When did I claim to have all the answers? Don't recall saying anything like that. All I was doing was defending the so called, by you, "twats" that are " moaning about" the walks being unfair. Which you attacked so vehemently.
Although a simple enough answer would be walk testing them. Use 5 or 6 different people over the course of the same amount of weeks to get a good average. All walks will never have the same finishing time. Obviously everyone has their own pace. But they could be a hell of a lot fairer.
Don't recall mentioning anythng about prepping deliveries either. I was on about the actual delivery span.
I know the "rules" perfectly well thanks, don't presume to tell me I don't. And if you think a manager will do anything to alter a walk that's too big when all they have to do is put someone on it who wont cut off you're in cloud cuckoo land.
Maybe your office is perfect and all walks are equal. If so, then that's a first. I've worked in 2 offices and have seen perfect examples of how unequal a lot of walks are.

I'm calm, just about :cool

But I doubt I'm the only one who took great offence at this :

Rather a spiteful, belittling, over the top reaction in my opinion. Which to me, was not going to go unchallenged.

KINMADFORIT AFTER ALL THE RANTING YOU HAVE MADE MY ORIGINAL POINT QUOTE EVERYONE GOES AT THIER OWN PACE UREKA. SECOND POINT WHERE DID I SAY A MANAGER WOULD DO SOMETHING TO ALTER A WALK NEVER MENTIONED IT. AS FOR YOU KNOWING THE RULES QUOTE IVE DONE A WALK TAKING 4 HOURS IF YOU KNOW THE RULES WHY DID YOU STAY OUT FOR 4 HOURS.I'LL SAY IT AGAIN IF YOU GOT TO MIDDAY AND YOUHAD BEEN OUT FOR 3.5 HOURS YOU CAN GO BACK AND THEY CAN'T MAKE YOU GO BACK OUT. ALSO DID YOU NOTICE IN THIS PARAGRAPH NOT A SINGLE SWEAR WORD PS WOULD YOU LIKE TO WISH ME HAPPY BIRTHDAY
