RM could have virtually destroyed this union if they had the sense to control their managers, thankfully they didn't and enough members had the balls to show the bastards that we weren't a busted flush.

It was a classic case of the rank and file taking control of the union and showing union hq how to win a fight.
Or was it in fact a case of some CWU hotheads who didn't get the Yes vote they were expecting imposing the will of the minority on the less militant majority, and orchestrating a strike by the back door that split the membership and went against all the democratic principles that trade unionists are supposed to cherish ? Not abiding by the outcome of a democratic ballot because that outcome is not in line with how you personally voted is bang out of order. If you say it is wrong for people to cross a picket line in today's dispute (when 77% voted for strike action) yet applaud people who defied the outcome of a democratic ballot three years ago, then you throw the union and everything we are supposed to stand for into disrepute and the credibility of your argument is shot to pieces.

Unofficial action this time around would play straight into RM's hands and would sound the death-knell for the CWU.
We have to be smarter than that and escalate the dispute by entirely legal means, carrying EVERYBODY with us. I know people in my office who, like myself, are 100% solid behind official strikes who will most definitely not support unofficial strikes. Given RM's current total intransigence, members could be out out for weeks on end, only to have to come back with all the strings we're fighting against imposed on us as a condition of the return-to-work agreement. Exhorting people to go unofficial would be like telling turkeys to vote for that nice Bernard Matthews chappie :d'oh!

Democracy is great isn't,after all Hitler was democratically elected wasn't he?

Sometimes democracy can get it wrong,Margaret Thatcher and the Poll tax comes to mind. The real democracy was hundreds of thousands of people refusing to pay the tax.Would you tell them that they were wrong to question an unjust and unfair tax breaking the law while doing so?After all Thatcher was democratically elected so was her Poll tax justifiable ?

Sometimes you have to go outside the law to change the law and that is exactly what the rank and file union members did in 2003.

No more talk of democracy please, our leaders don't believe in it so why should we?

NHCDCRick wrote:Its easy for us on here to say !"all out", we are at the least, activists with a union position or active lay members. The majority of our members are not. It didn't help much when the Ballot paper spelt out quite clearly the law regarding official disputes. This has made many members a bit wary.

I understand that not many activists would opnely admit that their office would be a bit dodgy to get out unofficially, but I will. I know that managers get on here and we have to be careful, but lets not get blinded by the support we have had so far and thinking that it would continue if it went unofficial.

I am a rep and have been for 22 years, I have had experience of many unofficial disputes, back when things were easier to resolve and we weren't managed by the bastards we got now. Just think about things. Good Luck to us all.

We wouldn't have any union or working rights if people didn't defy unjust laws. Keep us posted, we won't leave you out on a limb!

This is lattest by local newspaper ( Oxford Mail).

Post strike extended
MILLIONS more letters, parcels and cards will be held up in Oxford after the postal strike intensified yesterday.

Almost 400 Royal Mail workers have vowed to continue a wildcat strike until at least Monday.

Two million items are stuck in the Cowley sorting office. By Monday, that figure is expected to be seven million.

Managers have reacted by releasing a letter stating new conditions for staff once they return to work.

Police have been called in to ensure the picket lines remain peaceful.

A meeting at the Cowley Workers Club, in Between Towns Road, yesterday saw more than 150 strikers decide to continue the action until their next meeting at 11am on Monday. Of the 178 staff present, 175 voted to continue to strike, with three abstentions. No members voted to return to work.

Bob Cullen, Communications Workers' Union (CWU) representative, said holidays meant the number of workers on strike was about 380.

He said he thought about 25 workers had defied the strike to go to work.

The action began on Monday following the suspension of postal worker Steven Gill and a colleague.

Strikers say they have not been given a reason for the suspensions.

The strikers were further angered by a list of new rules that will come into force once the strike ends, sent out by area manager Mike Gevanny minutes before yesterday's vote.

Mr Gevanny's letter said staff would have no opportunity for short 'grace' breaks until the backlog of mail was sorted out.

Mr Cullen said: "It basically means if you want to go for a fag or go to the toilet, you have to put your hand up like when you were at school."

A spokesman for Royal Mail replied: "We are not asking Oxford staff to seek permission to go to the toilet. Our aim is to uphold national agreements that staff should not leave their work stations without our knowledge at extremely busy times."

The local strike has not been endorsed by the CWU, but 130,000 members of the union will be involved in a national strike from 7pm Wednesday, July 25.

Workers and management in Oxford are not even in discussions with each other, and the workers dug in further yesterday by setting up a barbecue outside the Cowley sorting office.

Every worker will have lost at least £325 in wages by Monday, Mr Cullen said.

Police have been called to the picket line three times in the last week, but there have been no arrests.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said it was disappointed the strikes had continued but that delays had been kept to a minimum.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
