Brayton Canal mail bags not linked to post office armed raid

MYSTERY still surrounds the discovery of four large post bags belonging to Royal Mail which were discovered in a canal near Selby.

Police closed off part of Selby Canal, at Brayton, at 4pm on Thursday after a member of the public raised the alarm.

Officers investigating the incident have confirmed the items were mail bags belonging to Royal Mail, but have said they are still trying to establish how the bags came to be in the river and if they were stolen.

A force spokesman said the mail bags have not been linked to the armed robbery at a post office in Melsonby, near Richmond, last month, in which 40-year-old postmistress Diane Garbutt was shot dead.

Detectives said the mail bags were also not linked to a separate armed robbery at a post office in Hensall, near Selby, last month. Armed robbers brandishing sawn-off shotguns threatened to shoot a customer if the postmaster did not hand over the contents of his safe, in the raid at Hensall Post Office, in Finkle Street, on March 4.

Speaking about Thursday’s discovery, a spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: “Officers are still trying to establish where the bags came from.”

A team of six police officers with search dogs, four firefighters and a fire station manager were called to the stretch of canal after the bags were spotted by a passer-by.

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said: “Royal Mail has not received a report of dumped mail bags in this area.”
