Not just more acceptable but will actually endorse it.
I really cannot understand how the CWU can reach the conclusions they have with this agreement knowing the problems prior to the IA last year, the reasons for which in no way shape or form have been addressed by this agreement.
There is only one group to come out of this agreement smelling of roses and it certainly isn't the workforce.

I admit this comes down to trust. If we can't then there will never be an agreement. There are workshops going on with union involvement. The trouble it caused last time must show RM that the standards have to be achievable? I have heard georoute 2 is significantly better than georoute 1 for instance.
fishtank wrote:What if the IWT and pegasus say you already have capacity?
Then you have nothing to worry about.
fishtank wrote:How many people already come in early and work over just to save themselves being hassled and harrassed?
Only because many are still working under the old selfish system of trying to gain time. Before it was ok, it only affected the individual. Now it affects other people. Just the other day I heard our rep trying to build breaks into our day followed by people calling him a tw*t behind his back because they wanted to get home early still by working through their break and rushing. It's simply a case of selfishness. They rush and come in early and never book o/t and the poor old souls trying to do it right are left isolated. Harrassment ends when everybody does it right, surely you see this?
fishtank wrote:If they are saying volumes fell 8% last year then that drop in volume will take care of D2D into workload and if they say they have fallen 8% this year.......
Setting manageable workloads will negate any facts or figures.
There is no agreement you could make to directly take the bullying culture out of RM. It is the same as at school. You stand up to them and stick together. Our equivalence is to work hard and do our job right, everybody. How can they touch you then?fishtank wrote:I have done the job properly since SDD was introduced and it has never stopped management from trying to harrass and bully me into increasing my workload.
The fact that have never achieved their aim has never stopped them trying and never will.
You will not stop Bullying and Harrassment until you tackle it head on and this agreement does not....if anything it makes it more acceptable.

What if the IWT and pegasus say you already have capacity to absorb this increased workload? If your workload increases then you must have capacity for it to increase?
How many people already come in early and work over not to save time just to save themselves being hassled and harrassed? If you say people will be B&H into accepting extra work for which they are not paid, then I say the only reason they can even try that is if sections of the workforce keep on working in the same manner as they did years ago, trying to make time. They can't B&H everyone if we all do the job right.
If they are saying volumes fell 8% last year then that drop in volume will take care of D2D into workload and if they say they have fallen 8% this year.......if you are dealing with 8% less volume than last year you already have capacity to absorb D2D into workload. If D2D comes into workload, they can make us take as many as they like, but they will be paying us for the time it takes.
I have done the job properly since SDD was introduced and it has never stopped management from trying to harrass and bully me into increasing my workload. The fact that have never achieved their aim has never stopped them trying and never will. The only defence against the onslaught is for all of us to do the job right. If they set unrealistic duties, then everyone will be claiming or cutting off, then hours have to be put back in. B&H and intimidation will be over because it will be clear as the day that more hours are needed and it is impossible to B&H everyone.
I have done my bit, I start on my time, I work hard for all the hours that I am paid, I don't use my car. Unfortunately there is a culture that still persists to take breaks at the end of our shifts where I work and I have no choice but to abide by it at the moment. The sooner this changes the better though.
All it takes is for everybody to do the same and most of our problems are over.

Banner 18 - you are perfectly correct, there is no form of agreement that can stop a bully, however you can create an environment that makes bullying much harder, what you do not do is totally ignore the problem and base a whole strategy on trust - I think I would be right in saying that the Americans were actually talking, in good faith to ambassadors from Japan, just as they bombed Pearl Harbour in 1941. There is trust, there is blind faith and there is being realistic.

1. Longs and Shorts WILL stay according to our DOM as it is impossible to stream mail to make every day equal.banner18 wrote:horris_1uk wrote:banner18 you say the benifits are in better attendance patterns?? can you explain your thinking behind this please? and also do you work in delivery or processing? I'm just curious as to if it's just delivery staff who feel it's a bad deal or other parts of Royal Mail. I think that DSA is the biggest problem Royal Mail faces, being forced to deliver other companies mail at a set price yet that compay doesnt have the expense of getting the letter "the final mile"
Well, less saturdays, 4 day weeks, maybe 3 day weeks for part timers. End of long/shorts. The attendance patterns that people desire will be negotiated locally anyhow. There may well be ways of keeping shorter saturdays for some.
Some people don't like 4 day weeks etc.. due to the long hours, but with proper breaks and manageable workloads, they are no problem.
I work in delivery.
I understand that many have a real problem with ESA and D2D being dealt with in the way proposed but lets look at the current system.
One guy can be earning the ESA stood next to someone who starts at the same time and does the same job but doesn't get ESA.
One guy is getting ESA, decides to leave, the guy who replaces him doesn't get the ESA.
One guy has over 600 dps and earns twice the D2D money the guy with 300 dps earns, yet the guy with 600 dps doesn't earn twice the amount for the letters and packets he sorted and delivered over the 300 dp guy.
Now D2D is out of sync with normal mail. Normal mail is paid for the time we work. Now I'm not saying I am against peace work, but surely all the work should be under the same rules?
It is only because D2D payments are tiny compared to our basic wages that nobody really notices, but if we did operate peace work, the earning differences across RM would be vast and pretty unfair because a 50+ year old guy would never be able to clear the same work as a 20+ guy and thus would earn significantly less.
Saying that just the people that handle D2D should get paid a supplement is very difficult when they are bringing it into workload. A lot of people in deliveries handle D2D at some point whether it is transporting it or dishing them out. The supplement is not a payment for D2D, it is the recognised earnings from existing revenues that RM get for D2D, spread out amongst deliveries.
The rules surrounding DSA will probably change drastically once RM has fully modernised. It is being used to put RM under immense pressure, hence the reason we are under pressure, for example having to consider agreements such as this one.
2. There is absolutally NO guarantee you will get 1in 4 saturdays off only a referance that it can be looked at .
3. There for the first time is NO time stipulated on how long you can be out delivering so technically 5 or even 6 hour delivery is on the cards
4. Attendance patterns will have to be agreed by the DOM ,what happens when we all want to finish early on the same day... He say's NO as he will have to put RM's needs first you will work when he tells you.
5. DSA change you must be joking even a blind man could see the unfairness to RM regarding this, MP's have already been lobeyed a campaign has already failed it will only get worse!!!
6. For every 2 posties RM has to generate an extra £150+ to Fund,Run and Maintain a veichle putting a massive extra strain on the buisnesses finances
7. There is still no deal regarding the pension Black Hole ( which RM and the Government created in taking a 13 YEAR pension holliday) your pension is still under threat!!!
And you can't see nothing too bad in the deal youmust have dolls eyes

Tell me, if you were mugged and a load of people stood around watching and did nothing, who are greater enemies of justice? The mugger, or the people stood watching?
How could you get harrassed if everybody in the office did what you did? They would have neither the time, gall, or capability. I know it might sound ideal , but the agreement goes someway towards this by banning private cars, building in breaks and hopefully signing and out of offices at our duty end once delivery methods are introduced.
Also, it is not a strategy of trust. It is a strategy of changing the way we work in order to protect jobs and improve our working environment.

Opinion only. There is no reason why each of these will happen just because your DOM thinks so.
It now looks like I am defending RM or something here which wasn't my intention. I have had my fair share of problems with managers and workloads after pay and mod.
I'm just trying to see a way through for all rather than just rejecting anything put in front of me.

Re: My reasons for maybe a YES vote.
The CWU top bods have decided against political blackmail, we could have said no ballot untill pension defict is tackled, but that needs parliment and that body does not have time before the election.
The government of the day after the elction will deal with it, but will do a sell off as well either in full or part. A Lib Lab coalition will mean partial, a tory majority means in all likelhood a full sell off.
Even the tories accept the need for changes and improvements to the regulatory system.

It is still every workers fundemental right to withdraw their labour over unfair and unjust working terms and conditions and as such the union should uphold the rights of all members.

OK so we have'nt got the money to run the 'business' as it stands currently, it all seems to be on the shoulders of the workers to sort this problem(yet again!). How about getting rid of at least 50% of the so called managers, they are no good to anyone and maybe a new career of a greeter at Asda would be more suitable.
Re-negotiate the pittance we receive for DSA, how can RM make a profit when we are continually making a loss delivering for these leeches/parasites or whatever you want to call them.

If RM want improved Industrial relations, they must respect their workforce, and stop regarding people as being pack mules to be weighed down with an ever increasing workload.banner18 wrote:
RM needed it more because of trouble in the workplace and strikes. There is no future for RM in a commercial environment with the current relationship they have with the workforce.
The union have made the best of a bad position. I never said the deal is really great. They have tried to make a deal that allows RM to return to healthy profit along with improving employee and employer relations.
I don't agree that it is the worst deal of the century. The benefits of the deal are not really tied up in money, in fact many will be worse off. The benefits are in better attendance patterns, better relations with the employer and hopefully better job security.
One of the things that is good about the deal is the end of private cars. People use certain methods to get done early. The more of these that go, the more people will do the job right. The more we do the job right, the less bullying and harrassment. When everybody does it right, bullying and harrassment is over. What are they going to do? B & H everyone?
The alarm call came when SDD was brought in and not many took notice, they still worked in the same manner as pre-sdd and use every method to try and get done early and make time.
While there are still a significant number of people working like this, RM can never know where it is. Everybody needs to work properly and accept that they will be working for the time that they are paid.
I'm hoping this deal goes some way into achieving this....
The union have let down very badly, a huge chunk of it's membership. It has completely lost sight of the core reasons for it's existence, namely, to improve the working lives of it's members, something it has failed to do for well over a decade now.
There is no benefit to be gained in yet again altering attendance patterns. At present, we enjoy an early enough finish, EVERY Saturday, with one in four, one in three, or whatever, the vast majority of Saturdays will become a nightmarishly burdensome, tiring, exhaustive, thoroughly demoralising, end to the week.
As for better relations, all of a sudden, with the very same people who have made our working lives a misery in their pursuit of ever-increasing profit, whatever the personal cost to our colleagues, sheer fantastical nonsense. I will be the first man on here to eat his words if such a miraculous transformation occurs, I assure you. A good deal of the common sense I inherited from older, wiser people, tells me that will happen once hell freezes over. Naive nonsense, dangerous nonsense.
Job security, we have no job security now, nor will we be any more secure in our jobs in the future, not as long as the CWU panders to the whims of assholes like Crozier who make things up as they tumble along.
As for doing the job right, thousands have, including myself, to what end though? To see my quality time at the weekend utterly ruined? If anything, longer Saturdays will see the total demise of the "do-the-job-right" campaigne, I and thousands others will cut as many corners as possible to ensure we finish on or as near as damnit to our current finishing time. A ludicrous move from the dis-credited CWU. Only a complete idiot will want to work to his time when that time has been moved to a 3.00pm finish on Saturdays.
You had the wrong alarm call, mate.
The alarm bells should have rung loud and proud, once the idiots at the top of the CWU started uttering such rubbish as, "We cannot turn away from change", "We understand that there needs to be modernisation", and other mutterings about increasing the load of shyte that will incense people the most, customers as well as workers, D2D.
The only danger to RM's existence, is the British Government, they could decide to cease providing funds to subsidise it, meaning Britain becomes the first nation in the Western World without a nationwide, serves everybody, postal service.
Not DSA, Not this lie of a so-called competition, Not depending on as few front-line staff to uphold such a massive operation as delivering the Nation's mail each and every day. A future British Government will do-away with the nation's postal service, and that will ensure the demise of the party that stupidly brings such a catastrophe about.
Finally, you hope against hope, my friend.

I basically agree with your sentiments. Remember this though. The union, when they saw this on the horizon, told us to do our jobs right, stop using cars etc etc... How many have took notice? Obviously not enough because RM keep on coming for us.
It is pointless moaning about the British government or DSA in the context of our industrial problems. I vote for the green party who would de-liberalise the postal market straight away. The reality we are in is one where people are only bothered about their own back yards and two main stream governments that have lost or have no connections with the working class anymore.
If later saturdays are such an important issue for you and you couldn't swallow them, then it is perfectly correct for you to vote no on the agreement over that. It is a completely personal issue. I do not relish working any later on a saturday either, it is a matter of weighing up all the parts of the agreement for me and not just one. If you cut corners to get done early still even after this agreement, then you are a fool. This god awful situation of RM snapping at our heels will continue. Our only defence is to do the job right and to isolate those around us that don't. If you were a shelf stacker in morrisons and you cut corners to stack quicker, would you expect to go home early? Their managers would laugh at you and probably stop you from rushing.
Managers answer to budgets, if they can identify savings they will go for them. If everyone works to their time, where will they identify savings? Who will they bully or harrass?

If your workload increases then you must have capacity for it to increase?
If you say people will be B&H into accepting extra work for which they are not paid, then I say the only reason they can even try that is if sections of the workforce keep on working in the same manner as they did years ago, trying to make time. They can't B&H everyone if we all do the job right.
If D2D comes into workload, they can make us take as many as they like, but they will be paying us for the time it takes.
I've had a major change of heart from being 100% committed to voting No, I'm voting YES.
I believe the CWU have got the best deal they can get. I'ts not great but for me it's a payrise.
This is based on my delivery office only but judging by posters my delivery office is indicative of most.
If the vast majority of my co workers grew a back bone then I would probably vote No.
You can blame RM management or the CWU but the reason this job is going to the wall is due to a huge number of fellow workers not doing the job properly, getting stressed over nothing.
The vast majority of fellow workers do 1 or all of the following.
1) Get in before there start time of 6am. They are in from 4.30
2) Never take a meal relief. I'm viewed as a bit of a rebel for going to the bank, Post Office, shop before delivery on heavy days. There's only about 10 people out of 90ish that will even sit on their bench for 10 minutes - it's just a frantic rush to get out and get finished.
3) Coming in on THEIR DAY OFF prepping DtD, Polling cards, Saturday mailsort. On Wednesday the round I was on (I'm a floater) had polling cards - I only work to my time (or 30 minutes over starting at 6.30 the next morning) so left them. Got back to the office 5 minutes before duty ended and he's their throwing them off on his day off
4) WORKING FOR FREE. OH Yes a big one at our office now. Over time is not paid anymore - instead of claiming you keep a record of time owed. Not that the DOM ( total knobhead) will give the time back. At least 6 people regularly earn the minimum wage by working 2 hours + a day for free. One person is owed 30+ hours, loads are owed 5 hours.
5) Using Private cars - people moan about losing out on Door to Door money but are quite happy to lose money on fuel, wear and tear on their car. They also appear to be ok with driving uninsured for Royal Mail.
6) Come in early, work for free, rush around like idiots after a strike. Royal Mail get a result when our delivery office goes on strike becasue most of the muppets work like dogs and work over unpaid to clear the office after a strike any way - so if I vote No then I'm voting for stike action. Don't really see the point!
7) Door step packets, peel off recorded stickers or just shove them through the door so as to complete in time. Redundancies at our office. Don't think so - there's too many morons to sack when the time arrives that they need to shed a few.
8) Do absorbtion in their own time. Oh yes - we have a few of those - they take absorption out with them - do it first - finish their round late for free. I asked 1 why he did and he said "I've not got anything else to do this afternoon
9) When Overtime was available - finish over their time but not claim.
10) Bitch about people being slow, some rounds being easy. Fantastic ammunition for a manager
I'll vote YES for a shorter working week, lump sums and a pay rise.
Don't care if I get 10 door to doors on a saturday - I only work to my time.
So why waste time with the same stale old CWU bashing, Royal Mail manager bashing when your real enemies are our spineless, gutless fellow workers.
If people started on time, did the job properly, didn't stress about trying to finish early the job would be great.
Can't see it happening.
PS I'm not a shirker - I work hard and never have managers on my back. If I don't do absorption then they know that I haven't got the time.
