Revealed: How thousands have to wait until 7pm for their post to be delivered

Post is delivered at 7pm in some areas of the country and more than a third of people are fed up with their service, a major poll by Britain's postal regulator revealed today.

The poor service has a crippling impact on thousands of businesses and anybody working from home.

When asked how they feel about the time that the post is delivered, a shocking 37 per cent of people said they are 'not satisfied'.

The frustration among small businesses is even higher, with 42 per cent saying that are dissatisfied by the time at which their postman finally turns up.

The report, from Postcomm, comes as Royal Mail is making changes which means post may not be delivered until 4pm in some parts of the country.

At present, it aims to deliver the post by 2pm in urban areas and 3pm in rural areas, but both deadlines are being moved back by one hour as part of its 'business transformation' strategy.

The timing of the post is a highly contentious issue, from birthday cards which arrive after the big day, long-awaited exam results or urgent cheques arriving after the bank has charged overdraft fines.

Postcomm's research, which takes place every year, asked more than 1,100 people about the time at which their post arrives.

Of the residential customers, more than one in four said their post does not arrive until after midday.

The most common time for the post to arrive is between 11am and 11.59am, although some have to wait until the later afternoon or even early evening.

Of the small and medium-sized businesses, a third said they have to wait until after 12pm. The most common time for their post to arrive is between 11am and 11.59am.

Overall, the Postcomm report shows that most people are 'very satisfied' or 'satisfied' with the timing of their post, with scores of 61 per cent among residents and 57 per cent among businesses.

This is because millions of people are out at work all day, and care more that the post turns up rather than the time at which this happens.

Yesterday the Communication Workers' Union said it has opposed plans for the deadline for postal deliveries to be delayed until 4pm in the countryside.

A spokesman said: 'We were opposed to the move on the grounds that we don't think it improves the service. In fact, we think it does the opposite.'

A Royal Mail spokesman said: 'Under the agreement with the CWU - which was backed unanimously by the CWU leadership - the overwhelming majority of people will continue to get their mail delivered by 2pm in urban areas and 3pm in rural areas, as happens at present.'

The union is calling for a dedicated business service to be set up, which would charge businesses for a guaranteed service to arrive before noon, or even same-day delivery, in cities.

The report comes as the price of a first class stamp, currently 39p, is set to jump to 41p next week, following a series of annual inflation-busting price hikes. It cost just 27p a decade ago.

First class post has also plunged to its worst performance for years due to last year's postal strikes, with only 78.8 per cent arriving the next day. The target is 93 per cent.

That's because RM/CWU negotiators were on it for four months to come up with the way forward

An area manager told us in a meeting a number of months ago that RM don't really care about the times that residential customers get their mail, only big businesses as that is where the money is. This is made all the more apparent with the new delivery schedule they are trying to implement. Also, Rm know that the Reg delivery 1p.m. guaranteed service is geared to fail as it stands now, so what happens if the deliveries get later and later. Another area manager basically said people really only want the assurance that a reg item arrives the next day, not time specific. If thats the case, get rid of Reg items as Rec items will surfice, but RM wont do this as the Reg service costs a minimum of £5.00.

and 16% (going on 100% some time soon) are not satisfied..?

Who are responsible for these figures??? Is it the same person who's saying the Mails falling by 10%
