If the work-load is shared equally then it will be fair. Rounds need to put into a properly programmed Pegasus then walk tested. It's not rocket science.

If Royal Mail wanted to stop the earlybirds they could do it with immediate effect. All they need to do is put a notice on the boards saying that their employers liability does not cover any person entering the premises before their scheduled start time. I would imagine if anyone had a problem whilst working before their time, this is what they would get anyway from RM.
There are people in our small country sub office that arrive early and enter the premises on their own. I would have thought that this is illegal as it contravenes the Factory Act, as I believe that this states that there should be at least 2/3 members of staff on site at any given time for health and safety reasons.

This would solve a LOT of issues for genuine posties.

If there is a signing on sheet when they enter then they are covered.
Area H&S rep told me that.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Would RM's insurance cover them anyway?

What happens if there is not a signing on sheet when you get there at your correct time. Often happens at my office. The managers put it out at about half six after everyone has started.

Whether there is a signing in sheet or not, I would also ask whether there is a first aider on site when these people come in early. Are Royal Mail allowing them to break health and safety regulations. If they are what are the H&S reps doing about this and I would also ask why CWU have not challenged this.

As was explained to me, by ASR.
It is known that some come in early, regularly This fact, and that the manager responsible has not and does not stop them from working only condones their actions, and as such they are then covered under the businesses insurance due to the custom and practice in operation.

They are still subject to the health and safety regulations that are part of this land.

People that come in early dont work for free. They start early, so finish early. Thats what happens in my office. Our hours are 6 -2. A lot are in for 5.15 so not many are working past 1.

Its not working for free. I would rather finish early and spend time with my family or hobbies than delivering mail well into the afternoon.

Unfortunately for the rest of us this is exactly where Royal Mail got their ammunition for their "everybody is finishing early" "nobody works their paid hours" onslaught that has directly resulted in this abomination of an agreement that now faces us all.
But hey ho as long as you get home in plenty of time for your "hobbies" although once you ARE delivering until 1500 you may have to adapt them a little. :wave

i can remember years ago it was such a problem people coming in early that the phg started locking the gate until the official start time. we actually had idiots climbing over the wall.
