What sort of stuff do these machines sort? Is it just mech or can they do flats, loose mail etc. now too?
Reason I ask is some of our DO staff were told that nearly all the frames for duties going to walk sequencing were going to be removed from the office. So I want to know how on earth we're meant to prep flats etc. if the walk sequencing machines can't do them.

 The CSS machines are mech letters only, as are any LSM or iLSMs used in MCs to sequence the mail. You'll still would need them frames even if there was a machine that could flats, would would non-mechable mail be prepped into.

On a semi-related note any MC or DO had a CSS machine installed yet?

It sounds as though someone has heard the term "Desktop Merging" and added 2 +2 and come up with 5. Desktop merging would work if flats came sequenced as well as letters however, as there will always be missorts, and not all flats are machinable the chances of desktop merging ever being used is fairly remote in my opinion.

What is more likely is variable frames. This is where 1 person sorts multiple walks on the same frame. Once one duty is prepped then they change the street guides and prep the next one. Again this is unlikely until FT/PT ratio is lower than now and lower than the 75/25 target in the 2010 deal.
