Hi,
I joined the Post Office when I was 15 in 1956 I spent a year as a Telegram Boy in the SW1 area then 2 years on the Counter as a Counter Clerk in the City.
I left the Post Office for a few years then rejoined as a P&TO in the Battersea area (SW11 - SW20) . I ended up as an overseer on the counter.
I then got on the London Payroll Taskforce which introduced computerised payroll in London.
After this job was finished I joined the embryonic iT dept based in Armour House.
To cut a long story short I ended up in Farnborough as a band 9 then took early retirement.
I was luck to have worked in the Post office when it was a good employer and I feel very sorry for all of the current Royal Mail employees.
I have seen many changes and much waste of money on cancelled projects it seems the leasons are never learnt
I did a total of 34 years in the Post Office.

Those were the days I suppose.. somedody I know had worked for Royal Mail/GPO for 50 years and retired in 1990 - he told me that being a Postman when he started was akin to being a Policeman, it was treated with the same kudos by the public.

How times have changed from that wonderful service of yesterday..

When I was a Telegram Boy at Knightsbridge BO we used to have a parade each morning and the PSM in charge would send you how if you were not dressed properly. But what a great job it was !!
