Im a big fan of CWU grade RML staff being able to try/move into different CWU grade jobs within RML. Needs to be easier/more oppurtunities to do that.
You applying to Daz. :wave
No I'm not applying to Daz, belle, I mean I know they are looking for mature entrants but I would think 64 is far too mature. :Very Happy

And if that fails there is always the CWU.

With your passion for justice, you would make a excellent addition to the CWU retired members section. :Very Happy

If your branch has one you could be the retired members secretary. :Applause

Yeah, that's great for you to say. Typical fluffy "we're all the same" CWU, but reality is different.
Maybe possible if they can show aptitude rather than just a high seniority number, but then again, judging by similar RM/CWU projects over the years (Engineering 2000 for one) where unsuitable/untrained/unskilled people have ended up in positions where they should never have been put to thier own and other's detriment, these schemes can't be relied on to "produce the goods".
I'd rather see the CWU push for proper four year training for 16-18 year olds rather than fooling some old posties that they can go back to school for three months and then hack it with the rest.
If this deal comes in i am applying for this, (rat hoping to leave sinking ship) Tman hasn't got back to me
Wrong reason for wanting to do it. Don't let the door hit yer arris on the way out.....

I'm afraid I'm one of those people who never look back, they always say a good soldier never looks behind him, I've never quite understood it but there you are - I left the Army after 11 years and kept in touch with no one, then the ESI after 16/17 years and kept in touch with no one and I truly believe that I will leave RM and keep in touch with no one - because I am a solitary person. I think the term Billy No Mates was coined specifically for me, I neither drink, smoke nor socialise.

You are correct though I do like to see fair play.

That was a comment for my collegaes on delivery...if you had been doing 3.5 hour pegasus duties with the prospect of 'unrestricted delivery spans' you would get it.

My original post which you didn't respond to was that i do have qualifications in a technical subject (HND in electronics) a number of staff at my DO have a trade electrician, plumber, why shouldn't we apply?
For what it's worth i agree that the selection criteria should not be seniority.
You appear to be under the impression that OPG's are baerly capable of doing anything more challenging than tieing their shoelaces.

To be fair though there are two in my DO who have Velcro instead of laces...... :whistle

I get your point, but it's the "wrong" reason for applying. If you only want this job because your existing postie one will become worse in some way, then I wouldn't give you an interview if it was my selection. There's plenty who apply many times only to be told there's no vacancies currently, so why take on a ship-jumper?
My original post which you didn't respond to
(was I supposed to?)
was that i do have qualifications in a technical subject (HND in electronics) a number of staff at my DO have a trade electrician, plumber, why shouldn't we apply?
HND electronics is a very worthwhile qualification to have, but do you have any electrical/mechanical qualifications to go with it? Any prolonged experience of practical hands-on work in this field? With all due respect to you, prisoners, pensioners and the long-term unemployed ofter go to college to get similar qualifications, but, as RM's bitter experience shows, that in itself doesn't make them able or suitable for this sort of work.
Similarly the old "I can do that, I'm a trained XXXXXXX" from watching posties is a well-known phenomenon (often termed the "Yosser Hughes" effect, if you remember the Boys from the Black Stuff programme) and often to be taken with a large pinch of salt. Being a sparky's bag-man for a couple of weeks doesn't make someone an electrician, as changing a tap washer doesn't make a plumber either. If someone was any good, why would they work hard for crap postie money if they really had a trade to use?

For what it's worth i agree that the selection criteria should not be seniority.

People, like fluids, tend to settle at their natural level, and that's why there aren't too many MENSA members on factory production lines, or civil engineers picking sugar beet. Horses for courses, and all that...........

Smarter than some, dumber than others, but don't let the inability to say anything remotely relevant to the thread hold you back. :cuppa

Tman I find your comments rather condescending in respect of your analogy to fluids and finding their own level. There are many people working for Royal Mail who have retired from highly paid jobs to use their later working years in less stressful (mentally) work. I am one of those, but that does not mean that I consider myself better tham my colleagues. In fact having worked for RM for some years now, I have great respect for the physical, conscientious, caring job that post men and women do, and the need for protecting the personal letters, documents etc of the British Public. This is not a simple labouring job that the current RM management would have the public believe, and to maintain the calibre of workers that is required for this job, RM should be looking to improve the terms and conditions, not the constant push to the bottom of the pile.

There's always the exceptions which prove the rule, but in my experience people such as yourself don't give it the old"I could do that/I used to do that" bit, and that's the difference.
{Although why anyone would choose to do such a physically demanding job in their "later working years" is beyond me}

I was commenting on your supierior attitude, which is evident time and time again.
That's just an irrelevant snidey reply. I was just telling you straight as RM would see it, though what would be the point of giving you false hope?

Quite right Lincox, there is no shame in common toil whatever it be. :Applause

Suggestion for people on late shift:

If, like me, you have to drop your kids off at school in the morning, print off a few copies of this document and give it to any posties you see on your way back. Even a traditionally 'pussy' DO near me are going to vote no.
