Imagine a few years down the line, when as will inevitably happen, there is disagreement during that particular year's pay discussions. The union will call a ballot for strike action, and RM could turn round and threaten to withdraw that counter-funding if there is industrial action in any office. The union would be totally fecked. Just the potential for RM to do that from this 'cosy arrangement' would make the CWU a toothless CMA clone

You certainly chose the right name - it makes you wonder considering the last two agreements if that is exactly what happened. Not just the financial side of course but the release time and the wage structure accorded to these people who "represent" us or is it us?

Actually, the reason for deducting our subs from our wages, is that it comes off our GROSS WAGE, not our net wage. So it costs us less. I know it's not much of a difference. But that's why it's done that way.

I've just heard the sound of a penny dropping (in my own head) .....

Now it becomes clear why, seemingly out of nowhere, the CWU executive suddenly agreed a deal back in 2007, just when we appeared to have RM backed against the wall, with nowhere to go and more strikes looming. And why the CWU were happy to call off the strikes for a pathetic interim agreement last November, when even closer to Christmas and more strike dates already set.

dvbuk, you are absolutely right in what you said on another thread. This deal is about defending the CWU machinery and structures, at the expense of the very members whose subs keep it in existence

When are the ballot papers coming out ? As soon as my NO vote has been sent off, Billy & Dave can ask Royal Mail for an extra £150/yr so they can go on kissing their ar**s and tucking-up the membership. But not with MY money

No, you're mistaken, CWU subs come from net pay.

If the union switched to direct debits the cost of 100,000 individual payments each period would cripple them - it would be far more expensive than the current arrangements.

No. On my Payslip, it's in the deductions collumn. Along witgh Income Tax, NI, etc.. And when I deduct my total deductions, from my gross pay, I get my net pay. So that means that my CWU Subs are being taken from my gross, not my net pay.

I am no tax expert but that does not mean that the deduction is applied pre-tax. I think in order for a subscription to qualify for tax relief it has to be paid to a professional body to which membership is required as part of your job.

Have a look at your Payslip. On one side, you have your basic pay, overtime (if any), allowances, etc.. On the other, there's your Tax, NI, Union Subs, etc.. If you take the deductions total, from your gross pay total, you get your net pay. And below that, there's a smaller box, for any deductions from your net pay.

Yes its is a deduction from gross pay, but as the the gross figure is not reduced pre tax there is no saving on tax and NI.

To be a deduction from Gross pay and save money, would mean Gross pay is reduced[/b before tax and NI is applied.

Those of us with bikes from halfords, our weekly gross pay is reduced before tax and NI is applied.

The amount of gross pay earned is not reduced due to CWU subs, if it was it would show up as lower gross pay earned with the reason.


Net pay is Gross minus Tax and NI and halfords bike payments (for those with bikes) everything else is a voluntary deduction from net pay.

Why do we have the extra box below our Net Pay then?
Does it serve any purpose?
