Glasgow, what is World Class Mail?
The CWU and RM are committed to the deployment of WCM if this agreement is voted in.
I understand that Glasgow Mail Centre is trialling WCM at the moment. Can anyone in GMC tell us what World Class Mail is all about and whether it is good or shite?

Re: Glasgow, what is World Class Mail?
In a mail centre volunteers get into a group and make up a small poster about how to organise things in your area. This sometimes takes up to 3 weeks with people off their normal duties, possibly on different attendance times. Walk around with a clip board. Like a holiday or being a manager. Also lots of sweeping up and new bins. If on a machine more hoovering and polishing - more keeping it clean. Mostly its for managers to try and improve themselves, who produce literally hundreds of posters, signs and stickers between them about performance and health and safety. These issues are not talked about any more than they usually would be. I cant see what is supposed to come out of it, no benefits here, just carries on as before. In the agreement 2010 it says WCM will be over by September 2011 in all units, its so lame it will just come and go without many people even noticing it.

The problem with making the top 10% is that it keeps moving.
The more effecient as an business you become the higher the standard of the top 10% obviously.

Re: Glasgow, what is World Class Mail?
I'm not from Glasgow, but we had WCM imposed on us some time ago. But basically, this is what it's all about:
1) Keeping your work area tidy, by picking up litter, cleaning your equipment, and performing "minor" maintenance yourself.
2) Small groups being involved in working out ways to make the work areas more efficient and safe. Which takes a lot of the blame away from the Managers, if something goes wrong. Particularly if there's an accident caused by equipment failure.
3) Changing the SSOW, so that less maintenance work is done by the Engineers (see 1). Which means that they will need less of them.
4) Maintaining "pillars", which theoretically make the whole Business stronger, by giving more power to the individual workers. Although I've seen no evidence of this myself. Except that those in the groups, meet with the Managers to discuss what's going on. But that doesn't mean that the Managers have to listen, does it?
Theoretically, this would be the best thing to happen to RM in years. But in practice, it's being abused to transfer as much blame as possible from the managers to us. Without actually giving us the power to prevent the problems. And of course. It's also being used to provide evidence for RM to use to cut the number of Engineers and Cleaners.

Re: Glasgow, what is World Class Mail?
Thanks Andy that helps, at our branch meeting nobody could explain it except "Its some japanese sh*te"!
Does it involve team working at all? Management-postie love-ins? massed ranks of workers in morning calisthenics? Like this:

Re: Glasgow, what is World Class Mail?
Yes, it does involve team working. That's what the little groups are for. They are volunteers from each section, who analyse what's happening there, and make recomendations to the appropriate "pillar", who report to Management about how to improve efficiency and safety. Although they actually have less power than the H&S Reps who already look after our safety.
There isn't any of the excercise time that you see in Japan. Although, unless you work at a desk, drive FLTs, etc.. There wouldn't be any need for it anyway. Delivery Posties, Seggers, etc.. Get more than enough excercise already.
I've actually looked into WCM in detail. Not from RM's point of view, but generally. If it's implemented properly, it's a fantastic system, which could do a great deal of good for all of us. How many times have you, or someone else, gone to a Manager with a problem, and been ignored. Because the solution would affect their budget, so you're expected to carry on regardless. For example: The Magnum Boots fiasco. Which was only resolved (in Deliveries, but not in MC/RDCs) after a considerable number of accidents. WCM (if properly implemented) would have got that sorted much faster. But sadly, that's not what's happening here. In the form that RM are using, it's a disaster!

How has this been resolved? I've ordered a pair of the new boots twice since November and I'm still waiting.I was lucky that I managed to find an old set of those chains for the boots, or I was humped during winter, as I literally have no heels left on my boots.andy2007 wrote:Yes, it does involve team working.
