ROYAL MAIL DISPUTE
We are now entering a new phase in our dispute.
The Postal Executive has today agreed to escalate the dispute on all fronts – industrial, political activity and how we get our message across to the public and business community.
We have agreed the following initiatives to step up our campaign and achieve a National Agreement covering the fundamental issues affecting the future of the industry.
Strike Action - We have agreed a rolling programme of strikes that means Royal Mail will face two weeks of functional/site specific strikes resulting in 2 weeks of continuous disruption to mail services.
This is designed to hit Royal Mail harder at minimum cost to our members. Details of the full programme of the strikes are attached. For individuals it will mean two 24 hour strikes over the next two weeks.
We will be issuing further guidelines on how the strikes will be carried out and the need for all members to support the action in a disciplined manner.
If required, the Union will be announcing a further programme of strike action no later than Monday 30th July.
Political Activities - We have agreed a fresh programme of political activity aimed at lobbying and speaking to every single MP to ensure that Royal Mail’s real plans are completely exposed.
A meeting will be taking place of our senior political officers to ensure this programme is undertaken in every part of the UK. We have been invited to meet directly with Government Ministers. We are also meeting with the General Secretary of the TUC and galvanising support across all Trade Unions.
Getting our Message Across to the Public and Business Communities - A fresh leaflet will be designed to handout to the public during strike days. We have engaged a professional Lobby company to target Small Businesses Federation, Private Business Association and other relevant pressure groups in order to convey our message successfully.
We will be taking out new adverts in all main newspapers to put the postal workers’ case and expose to the public Royal Mail’s real plans. Branches will be expected to place these adverts in their local papers.
We are also assessing the logistics of delivering a leaflet to every household in the UK (out of work hours). Branches should redouble their efforts in leafleting at stations and organising stalls etc at summer functions/fetes.
It is important that Union Reps convey to our members the reasons behind the decision to escalate the dispute. These are as follows:
• Allan Leighton and Adam Crozier are refusing point blank to engage in any negotiations to settle this dispute. The truth is under their leadership the company does not negotiate. They simply try to impose change on the workforce and constantly ignore the views of the workforce.
• Royal Mail are deliberately conning the public about their modernisation plans. The truth is Royal Mail have never tabled a single proposal for the Union to agree the introduction of new automation.
• Royal Mail has made it clear that they are pressing ahead with their plans to impose change. Over 300 offices have been put on notice that later deliveries will be imposed from the 13th August. Furthermore, Royal Mail has confirmed the abolition of Sunday collections as the next stage of their plans to reduce customer services.
Despite Royal Mail’s position the Union continues to explore every avenue to secure a negotiated settlement. We have written again to Allan Leighton and Adam Crozier urging them to spend all their time working on their Royal Mail responsibilities and negotiate a resolution to this dispute, copy attached.
We have made a further offer that if Royal Mail engage in meaningful negotiations and step back from executive action, as set out in an earlier letter to Allan Leighton – the Union will call off the next planned strikes.
The Union remains resolute in our determination to see this dispute through.
A further letter will be sent to individual members’ home addresses explaining all the issues involved in the next phase of our dispute. In the meantime, Branches should ensure this LTB is circulated in every workplace and that we begin a fresh round of face to face meetings with the membership.
