As i said in an earlier post forget the "year 3" pay deal of 3.5% because by then we will be owned by TNT or another major player. :nervous

I think you are absolutely right.
The chances of us getting to 2012 without at least a "strategic commercial partner" are very slim and that is why this section is included in the pay deal.

"Both parties also recognise that there is uncertainty in the commercial environment that may affect the business in either a positive or negative way. Against this background it is recognised that there should be flexibility to reopen this element of the agreement in response to unforeseen events which have a significant impact on the business and its employees."

The CWU will spin this as a good thing meaning they could negotiate more but that is just pie in the sky.
Once we get to 2012 that is going to look like a 3.5% deal for one year and the likes of TNT aint having that.
Thanks to this wonderful "agreement",i personally will be entering 2012 earning less money than i did entering 2009.
That is one hell of a con trick to pull on many of your own membership.

So I take it if you set up your own business, your 'mission statement' would be to operate at a loss and pay more in wages than you receive in income ?

Businesses exist to make a profit. Without that, your job and mine would be at risk. Taking on more Door 2 Door contracts brings in more revenue at a time when more and more people are paying their bills online and not receiving paper bills. If RM don't get some new revenue streams to replace those lost to e-commerce, we're all screwed. I'm not the one in lala land. Those that think RM can stay exactly the same in the face of a changing world are deluding themselves. I don't see McDonalds having a business strategy that says let's give all our profit back in additional pay, and while we're at it, turn away potential new customers, so why would Royal Mail continue to agree a cap of only 3 D2Ds per week and miss out on contracts that bring in more work which in turn secures jobs ?

Woolworths was a 'much-loved' British company. But hardly anybody shopped there anymore, so it went bust, because they couldn't or wouldn't adapt to a changing marketplace. The elderly and the middle-aged love the concept of daily postal deliveries and the quaint old art of letter-writing. But face reality, there's whole generations growing up now who have NEVER sent or received a letter. If it wasn't for e-bay and ordering dvds & cds off the internet, many of them would never ever use Royal Mail when there's so many things they can do instantaneously via the web or via text messages. That is the reality of the situation !

In this thread, we've got two posters both stating categorically that RM is being readied for a future privatisation.

One says it's because RM is being starved of investment ...
provo postie wrote: Isn't the systematic destruction of royal mail the long term goal? From what I can see they are trying to run it into the ground so it can be sold off
and the other says the exact opposite, that loads of money is being poured in ...

So which of these two is correct, wacko74 ? They can't both be right. Either RM is being systematically destroyed, or it is fast becoming a ruthless profiteering company that is committed to that unholiest of unholies, MAKING A PROFIT AND ADAPTING TO A CHANGING MARKETPLACE. Doing this will make your job and mine more secure than it would otherwise have been if the CWU doggedly stuck to a policy of 'let's hope the internet is un-invented and all that money we've p!ssed away supporting Labour over the years gets EU Competition legislation reversed'. Anyone who thinks that is a good way of protecting jobs is truly living in lala land

Royal Mail are already making massive profits, hundreads of millions after more hundreads of millions being payment into the pension black hole. And Crozier is the highest paid civil servant in the land for good reason - because the company is hitting targets and generating huge profit. That's money hard earned BY US.

Wollies went bust because of an outdated selling model in an economic recession. We are not going bust but do have a HUGE pension black hole created morraly corrupt past managenment practice and unfair enforced DSA which makes us deliver letters at a loss.

RM doesn't have to screw it's workers into oblivion to be a profitable concern and we shouldn't feel obliged to accept a life-changing shafting to ensure more profits for the board of directors.

Absolutely 110% correct, we got more chance of winning the lottery, than seeing 3.5% increase in 2012, and that is for one reason and one absolute crystal clear one, we will be working for tnt as royal mail will be no more! Would you honour agreements that were made 2 years previous if you were the new owner of royal mail??????

Just becasue one company takes over another doesn't mean existing agreements can be torn up. However the agreement ALLOWS a new paydeal to be set in year 3 so it also allows TNT to give us a payfreeze or pay cut based on their economic forcasts for the buisness.

Vote YES and we vote to be shafted over pay by TNT. Nothing could stop them.

i am a network driver currently on 24135k, tnt class 1 drivers are on about 19k, its not going to be a payfreeze, its going to be a immediate paycut of 5k a year, i'll be earning less in 3 years time, than i was 7 years ago

Making us more attractive to a private buyer is the aim of this agreement and the investment in machinery etc.

A few years ago, POL tried to sell its cash centres to Securicor. Management told us that the deal did not go through because Securicor did not like our record of Industrial Relations.

If we give in, we will get a European superstate organised along mandelsonian lines in which workers will be little more than serfs. Collective bargaining is being used as a way to dodge employment law. Mandelson is promoting "employee engagement" as this will allow employers to change workers' contracts because they can claim that consultation has taken place. He is one clippery sunt.
