I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

This offer is in return for our people delivering the operational changes we have been discussing with the union.
The five simple changes are as follows:
1. Night shifts in delivery units
Increased walk sorting means there is less indoor work in delivery units. This means we can stop night working in delivery offices - apart from in a few city centre units with very high proportions of firms’ deliveries. Most offices have already removed their night shifts and we expect that the rest will be completed by the end of July 2007.
2. Later delivery start times
New legislation means our 7.5 tonne vehicles won’t be allowed to travel faster than 56 miles per hour. This means mail will arrive later into delivery units - so we won’t need so many people to start work so early in the morning - with start times moving to 06.00 or 06.30am. However, the existing early morning allowance will be ring-fenced and paid in line with the MTSF agreement, which means it’s protected for up to three years.
3. Weekend working
Operating mail centres at the weekend is very expensive - especially when we are handling lower value products as this eats into our margins and reduces our profit. We are therefore changing Sunday working arrangements too, so we stop spending money processing non-time critical products and focus only on First Class and express products.
We are also consulting with Postcomm over stopping offering Sunday and Bank Holiday collections - except for our biggest posters. We are hoping these changes will be introduced by July 2007.
4. Efficient summer scheduling
During the summer, traffic volumes fall - which means our productivity falls because we are unable to flex our resources. This year, we want to involve all our postmen and women in each office to review summer scheduling to take account of the reduced workload - each office is unique and with your manager you’ll know best how to make this work. This will be introduced into all delivery offices in time for summer 2007, and a similar approach applied to other operational units, such as mail centres and RDCs.
One of the benefits, apart from saving money, will be a significant increase in the availability of annual leave in the popular summer/school holiday weeks.
The challenges we face
This is a very good offer for a business facing the challenges we are currently facing and is broadly in line with the offer to our Parcelforce Worldwide colleagues which has been endorsed by the CWU.
Our volumes are falling as customers look to reduce their costs and move more and more business onto the internet and email. Plus, income is being hit as our customers down-trade to our cheaper products or choose to use downstream access through competitors, such as DHL and TNT. So although the delivery pouches are still heavy they are getting lighter and the letters in them are earning us a lot less money - up to a third less than a year or so ago.
This is the best we can afford - and we can only really afford it if we crack on with making the local savings on the ground.
The money will not go up - regardless of what anyone says - or does.
And an update to this was........
1. Leave the current Door to Door cap in place - and take Door to Door payments out of the current pay deal.
2. Invest in new automation - which will allow us to wrap items that would currently be delivered as Door to Door into a single item.
3. Include Door to Door payments in the 'big deal' that we have offered to discuss and agree with the CWU. The big deal will take a fresh look at postal pay with the aim of doing two things:
• Simplifying the package and consolidating some allowances - to strengthen base pay
• Increasing our flexibility, efficiency and our ability to compete
• We would like to have the 'big deal' done and dusted by the autumn of this year and for it to sort out pay for the next four years.

Thanks for that Madsorter but can only see 4
1. We are suffering under that one already and still they cut back staff - we dont have enough sorters.
2. Later starts - not without national agreement and without safeguards for familiy flexible working. Not looking forward to longer rounds during the hotest part of the year, again without safeguards.
3 This is a lessening of the service in line with closing Post Offices and I think they are preparing us for full privatisation.
4. Does this mean that managers who apprarently leave early as they have nothing to do after we leave (i got that from an acting manager) will cover walks when people are on sick/annual leave. What happens when we have a bulk mailing will they force us to go over our time because they have no-one to cover it because they are all on sick or holidays.
5...... Missing
D2D Ok no problems there so long as they increase payments or at least keep them at the same level and not try to fobb us off with 1 payment when there are 3 in the wrapper.

too f***ing right i got banned just for writing they were biased in favour of management! they cant even take democratic debate the control freaks - one of them runs a small mail business anyway acording to the website - who the rest are is a mystery, though "a strong interest in postal issues' is either a manager, runs a business with an interets in the post, a quisling to quote IWW, or some sad bastard who needs to get a life along wiht a new hobbystubaby wrote:f***ing Hell mail shite.
That site is the managers mouth piece and is the postman's enemy.
Vile and crap site that just has a pop at us all the time.
Other than that......
this forum is much better it is the workers saying what they think period and its not some lifestyle choice its about defendingour jobs and livelihoods.

Get the facts right
The truth is out there. HellMail is probably a management counter-site. http://www.hellmail.co.uk/GH_ShowArticle.asp?HID=619. Now states that the union only want 4.9% rather than the 27% we really asked for. The whole campaign from Royal Mail is flawed from top to bottom. Take the salaries from the pr people within Royal Mail and we probably have a deal. The reality is that Mr Leighton has taken this very personally, despite the fact he loved us when we gave him a chance in 2003. The reality is now we have seen through his facade he has spat his dummy out, and really has made this a personal issue. Grow up Mr Leighton. Listen to your people as you so quickly quote for the newshounds.

They talked about summer lapsing in my office last year. Apparently RM directors went over to America to speak to the USPS who had trialed a similar operation a couple of years previous who told them it was a waste of time and was more hassle than its worth.madelin4 wrote:surley the summer lasp thing wont come in, like with us still striking the summer will be over soon! sure they said june, july and august for summer lasps..![]()
Glad to see they took note then isn't it.

i'm crap at maths but i think the £40 million management bonus is worth a bit over 1% more to our pay assuming 150000 postal workers.
They are rewarding managers for increasing our workload by overseing cuts, bullyilng people into taking more out, geting rid of people etc not rewarding us for increasing our workload - the future under Royal Mail's business plan in a nutshell :cfo :lfo
