Quitting the Union
I can see why people are split on the deal as such I am undecided. But I do get frustrated by all this quit the union talk. Firstly if you dont like whats going on then stand for a Union postion, if people agree with you then you will be able to change things. If you dont get elected then maybe you need to accept that you are a minoriorty opinion in your office. But to walk away is pure defeatism. This play's into RM's hands as a divided office will always be in trouble.
In my own office a lot of people have differing veiws but they are pretty slow in comming forward to do the Rep's job although they are very strong in not starting early and in supporting action of all kinds. If you dont like whats happening then take responspability, dont just blame others.
In my area we have a constant stream of changing reps as most of them find it a lot harder than they think when they have to balance the needs of everyone in the office

Re: Quitting the Union
I know exactly what you are saying and I do agree for as long as the ballot is an option. What you need to do is send a clear message to the union that this agreement is not acceptable to the vast majority of people.
However (there is always a however isn't there?) We also need to look at how the CWU managed to trump to the press that this was so brilliant and how we will all be so rich beyond our wildest dreams because of their hard work the last four months.
This clearly was an agreement of the union's own survival, of Billy Hayes and David Wards continued pay checks and clearly not a lot more. If this vote does pass I will be quitting the union because it is a union that patently only has it's own interests at heart. (And I'll also need the money.)
As for being a rep and changing everything sadly that's a utopian view. The average postmen and women were not locked in talks, rather fat cats on both sides supping tea all day in expensive hotels paid for by the tax payer and union members. Both fighting for what was best for themselves.

Run, rabbit run. Dig that hole, forget the sun.
And when at last the work is done. Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one

Re: Quitting the Union
I think that some time we forget that the people in those talks were the same as us at one time postmen, I do belive they strive for the best deal, but to balance everyone's asperations is a bit harder than we may think.
Look how long it took for a national strike. The word I heard were that some "araeas were not up for it, and work had to be done" Maybe we should look at some of the divisional reps. London and certain other area's were out for quite some time before the cavalry finally arrived. There was a feeling in certain parts of the country that they did not want a fight, I always think it is the divisional reps that pull a lot of power, and they need to be held accountable for the amount of time it took to get the national ballot up and running.

Re: Quitting the Union
I agree. No one should be talking about leaving the union at this point. I think there should be a massive no vote and then time to re-evaluate the situation. The union needs to be reminded of who they are responsible to. But to leave the union is to lose any hope of ever changing things in the future. I was talking to one guy in my office who's not a member. "That's the difference between you and me," I said: "At least I get the satisfaction of being able to vote against this agreement."

Re: Quitting the Union
I think its fair to say that the the union have got it wrong this time.
If the deal goes through I shall be resigning my membership as i feel my money will be better served going to a local charity or similar.
In my opinion theres no point in supporting a union or any other organisation that doesnt reflect your position or circumstances.

Re: Quitting the Union
Viking that is just what I am getting at .
If people quit the union we are in trouble. What people fail to notice is the vast majority of deals get voted in, Because the vast majority of people agree with the leadership, and realise that they are trying to save our jobs.
The last agreement I can rember getting rejected was the original way forward, which was ammended and then accepted.
The union is not perfect but without it we really would be up s'''t creek. Would we have got offerted any money for lifting the cap on D2D. let alone a guranteed pay rise for the next 3 years. Best we could have hoped for without a union would have been a lump sum.

By increasing my workload with no added benefits, in actual fact LOSS of benefits. It's certainly not me that needs to get a grip.viking1488 wrote:get a grip there looking after all of us there tryin to save our jobsIPS wrote:Even if that job is now looking after themselves?mountec1 wrote:Excellent, someone who talks sense,i have slagged the union off before but i would never think about quitting the union because most of the time they do a good job.viking1488 wrote:quitting the union? well in my mind the royal mail would be a lot worse without the cwu, royal mail would just walk all over us!!! u think its bad now or going to be bad with this new agreement? well just have a think of what it would be like without the union there tryin to save our f***ing jobs give them a break if your not happy well you know what to do come out of it but if or when you get into s**t just see who is there to watch your back!!!!!!!

Re: Quitting the Union
viking1488 i think you need to go back and read the agreement. not only are 50% of the MC's going but they are aiming for 75/25 split between pt/ft. now the figure going about at the moment is that we are running at a 79/21. im crap at maths but thats a hell of a lot of jobs going not saved.
