To say everyone was in agreement would be......... a lie.

To say that the majority went away thinking perhaps in a different frame of mind than when they arrived is true. The presentation from Bob Gibson went down very well and gave an excellent analysis of the D2D issue. This will be sent to all branches.

Every local rep in the UK will have a meeting with the CWU Officers over the next couple of weeks and every branch has been asked to call members meetings with PEC speakers etc.

Whatever the outcome these debates must be had and the best place for that is face to face.

I have always respected Lovejoy, Dingo etc. So I ask all posters to respect their efforts on this website. Hey guys and girls, if they were not here there would be no point in having royalmailchat. I do admit I would want more of the high ranking or knowledgible union reps to participate on this site. Having said that I agree with so many posts that the senior members of CWU are not serving the members properly. The only excuse for this is political.
I am a Mail Centre rep. I am in total agreement with the delivery people. Unless the "Final" agreement is more defined I cannot see how any branch can agree to this deal. I refer to the 2007 agreement which had the same wording in that agreements would be jointly agreed but we ended up with what RM wanted in the 1st place before agreeing to it. It alright for Lovejoy, Dingo etc to point to the fact that the union will be involved. The fact is that many units do not have a union rep, those that do have elected a rep who is the only man standing,and many of those are so weak with management they have no influence at negotiation level. In my unit we have a rep deep in cohorts with management, a rep who tries to challenge mangement but has no influence at the end and a area rep who has very little support from members and bats his head against a brick wall. My point is that Lovejoy, Dingo etc are very good at their union involvement but the rest of us really are out on a limb. And the activists are being intimidated by mangement. To all posters " best of luck" when you are represented.

In a nutshell I can spot a lot of power politics going on here. Far too many officials desperately positioning themselves to curry favour and climb the greasy pole. Seems like some are so focused on self interest they have forgotten the union constitution "to protect and ENHANCE the terms and conditions of the membership", can't find the bit about we must boost the profits of RM at all costs.
I find it very odd that any union official should cite the facts that many branches failed to resist RM's attacks as a reason to dismiss any criticism, and then recommend a deal that will allow these local negotiations to continue . So they know many branches do not have representatives with the qualities needed to resist RM trickery , yet they are content to abandon the membership of these areas.

Will that DVD be edited by the guy from Panorama ( ) or Despatches ( )? I'd rather have the full, unexpergagated and unabridged paper copy in all it's imprenatrable glory.....cos a DVD could say as much or as little as HQ think they need to say.

Dont be paranoid, every member has the right and the need to hear this explained from senior CWU bods, it is only right and proper that they explain everything to the reps and members.

Are you saying that the proposed agreement should not be explained to the members and reps face to face from the national officers and the PEC?

For once, I disagree wholeheartedly with you Big Daz. Although the term Brainwashing, is a gross egaduration. The fact is, that the Hard Sell has begun.

Now sadly, we don't know (because we were kept out of the loop!) what RM were demanding during the negotiations. So we don't know whether they did a good job, but fell short of a good deal. Or whether they simply failed us. Either way. After reading the agreement thoroughly, I can't vote for it, with a clear concience. And will therefore be voting against it.

Now, I'm not saying that everyone else should do the same. That would be a stupid, and undemocratic attitude. There may be some, who genuinely feel that it's the best we can hope for, and choose to vote for it.

We can all put our views across, and discuss the issues nationally. Which is the best thing about RMC: We can discuss the issues openly, and honestly. Because the discussions are annonymous, and therefore, there's little chance of being disciplined for holding a particular view. Unless of course, you're "outed", tracked down, or choose to tell everyone who you are (although that's very rare).

Obviously, there will be many people, who won't bother to read beyond the rewards section of the agreement. Or will skim through it, rather than reading it properly. And that's where these meetings will be useful. But everyone attending them should bear in mind, that the National Officers, have a vested interest in getting this agreement voted in. Because the PEC has decided that it is a good agreement, and would therefore look bad, if it was voted out. Particularly if it was by a large majority.

I'm not saying that people should go there with a closed mind. Far from it. Just that they should be aware that the National Officers are at these meetings to convince the Members that it's a good deal. I personally believe that it's a very bad agreement. Not just for myself, but for the Delivery Posties as well. In fact, it's far worse for them! However: I'm not arrogant enough to assume that I can't be wrong about this. If someone can come up with a convincing argument against my views, then I will of course listen, and take it in. I seriously doubt that there is a good enough argument to prove me wrong. But I'm not ruling it out.
