2010 and Beyond, The Winners and Losers

Post by POSTMAN »

http://www.cwuyouth.org/view-blog.html?blog_id=91" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The National Agreement was published earlier this week and I think it is very important that CWU young members express their views on this purposed new agreement. We are the future of the postal industry we are in it for the long haul so it is vital that our views on the industry we want to work in are taken into account. I hope this Blog will open up and stimulate debate.

The first thing that strikes me about 2010 and beyond is that the agreement is unbalanced. There are many elements to the agreement that are acceptable and in many cases there will be winners that will emerge from this agreement. If you work in an RDC or Mail Centre that doesn’t close then I would say that you are a winner because you are getting a pay rise which is reasonable in comparison to what is going on in the wider economy and the public sector. This is in exchange for relatively little change.

Even if you work in a mail centre or RDC that has the prospect of closing I think you maybe able to just about stomach the deal. The agreement allows you to influence closure plans from the very earliest stage and provides a frame work that enables the CWU locally to put forward counter proposals and alternatives. MTSF has been maintained and improved in the case of excess fare payments. So if the worst thing happens the exit package is in place.

The big losers in this deal are members that work in the delivery function. Many members will face a pay cut in real terms in the first 2 years depending on the number of delivery points you have and the number of D2D that you did prior to this agreement, I never imagined I would see this from the CWU. If you have a season ticket for you football team you can rip that up or if you play football you can hang your boots up because last letter on a Saturday will now be 1500.

What is actually likely to occur is that delivery members will be out-voted on their part of the agreement by those working in other functions.

If the agreement in delivery is as good as is being said then why can’t it just be voted on by delivery members?

On top of this no national standards have been agreed on what is a fair work load or delivery span and this part of the agreement seems to be at best incomplete.

The Union has in my view gone backwards on this agreement to a time when winners and losers was a regular feature in national agreements as Members with lot more service than me have told me about.

Bravo! Well put and you are so right.

If the union is not careful delivery staff will leave the union in droves, just what RM wants, a divided not united workforce.

Certainly appreciate this blokes honesty - in reality Delivery Staff outweigh others by about 2.5 to one, what is needed is a concerted effort to get as many as possible to vote, the problem is of course deliveries are notoriously poor at voting and many are part time and non-members but we live in hope.

I just wonder what Brendan Barber and Roger Poole really think of this agreement and if they would have approached their membership with it in the past?

There is no winners in the deal, on paper it looks like their is winners. Mail centre will get it a lost worse, ie losing their jobs in 3 year time with a piss poor deal, or get offered part-time in DO'S. The employment situation will have picked and no one will want to work for rm. If your a driver you could be posted to a do to cover a park and loop walk. No winners only losers. Nothing is set in writing for winners or job security. Not even our pension.

It's a totally unfair system. Esp for mail centre staff if we outnumber them by 2:1. Hardly democratic.

Think you have to make a distinction now between the CWU and the leadership.
It is becoming increasingly clear that the two day national strike was just used as a ploy to get the strikers in Scotland and London back to work, and it worked.

This bit made me laugh:
If you work in an RDC or Mail Centre that doesn’t close then I would say that you are a winner because you are getting a pay rise which is reasonable in comparison to what is going on in the wider economy and the public sector. This is in exchange for relatively little change.

Even if you work in a mail centre or RDC that has the prospect of closing I think you maybe able to just about stomach the deal. Now, where do I start? :hmmmm
1) Until the automated Segging machines are up and running, the current targets for Segging are unrealistic. Because they're based on the number of RSCs, NOT the number of Mailbags. So some days you vastly exceed the target, because there are a lot of bulky Mailbags. Other times you can complete the target comfortably, ad do some extra. And others, you have absolutely no chance of hitting the target, and get the Managers mouthing off that you're all lazy and taking the p**s. The fact that the targets are hit or exceeded, when the majority of RSCs contain the average cage fill, and vastly exceeded when they contain less. Seems irrelevant to them! :evil/mad

2) Although the agreement says that something will be done about it. Theres far too little detail, and we all remember what happened the last time we had an ambiguous agreement, don't we? :hmmmm

3) It says that there will be consultation with the CWU about closures. We've all seen what RM think consultation is, haven't we? :hmmmm How about a guarantee that nothing will happen, until we actually know whether this new automation works reliably, Nationwide, before we start closing more RDCs? :hmmmm

4) Some of you will have had the misfortune to encounter WCM already. But if this agreement comes in, then you'll ALL have to use it within a few years. I've already explained my reasons for being against WCM in the past, so I won't go into it here.

5) And what about the Drivers, MC, Deliveries, MDEC, etc.. Do they really expect people to sell their Collegues down the river, for their own financial gain?!?!? :arrrghhh :no no :arrrghhh
