Sorry if realism comes across as being a looser and I certainly don't feel like a victim, but then again for over twenty five years I have supported many strikes and will more if required if thats what the vote is.BELIAL wrote:If you can muster the enthusiasm maybe you should just end it all now, you beginning to sound like one of life's' woe is me' poor old victimsI do not think there is enough fight left in many members.Post after post of we are doomed ,you come across like a spineless looser
But if throwing insults around makes you feel better feel free my backs broad enough

No insult intended just pointing out how you come across. Don't worry you are not alone , seems to be a lot of the "I was born in the union , but now I can't be arsed to get out of bed' brigade about recently.
Your brand of "realism" won't pay your bills or keep you in work. You carry on and put your head in your hands, me ,i'll do something about it ,wether it works or not

Now we could have a long debate on the rights and wrongs of collective responsibilty, but basically I regard the local branch being the true authority . I would expect that my branch will have a meeting to discuss this "deal" at some length and that meeting will determine the branches policy towards the vote in the form of a recommendation. I would expect all those taking part to abide by that collective decision and that would include reps as well as branch officials anyone who disagreed can of course resign and follow there own path, but we have to be responsive and in any given locality speak with one voice.
This is completely wrong, reps are there in order to represent the feelings of their fellow workers, not toe the HQ line and sell the deal to us.
Try reading what I actually wrote .......................
The local branch memebers would meet discuss it and vote making it branch policy.
Sod all to do with HQ and I have never toed the HQ line
Well the local branch line then. Of course an office rep should tell his office what the branch are recommending, but he was voted in as rep by his fellow workers, not the branch. He's also entitled to his own view and it's ridiculous to suggest he can resign if that view disagrees with branch, it's up to the members if he retains his position or not. Personally I would have no respect for my rep if he blindly repeated what he was told by the local branch.

surely the branch is the local members all there in attendance, listening , joining in the debate , asking questions and voting.numan wrote:End of the road wrote:numan wrote:End of the road wrote:There will be many reps supporting the vote and many opposing, thats only right and fitting in a democratic union.

I have been involved with decisions at branch level I did not agree with, I followed what the branch decided because the branch is the membership and IMHO the one closest to the true views of this union.

Would you follow branch even if it disagreed with your own opinion and also the feelings of the majority of your own office?

As a branch official my personal views where second to that of the branch.
When I speak of the branch I mean a place/meeting where every member has the opportunity to attend, speak and vote. Not just one office or one unit the whole branch and as a branch official one would be duty bound to follow whatever that meeting decided.

I was unaware of that but I was referring to your view that an office rep should stand down if he disagreed with what the local branch were proposing.

I dont know which branch you are from, but our branch does not have meetings for all members to attend. The only ones able to attend branch meetings are invited reps, and due to meetings being on a weekend it is not possible for most to attend.End of the road wrote:numan wrote:Would you follow branch even if it disagreed with your own opinion and also the feelings of the majority of your own office?

I have been to many of these and they are without doubt steered by those with vested interests, there is very little democracy on show.

Re: How can CWU have REPS advising NO?
My branch is having a reps meeting in the morning.
We will also be having members meetings around the branch area, due to the geographical size of the branch we will divde the patch up along RM cluster lines with a meeting for each patch.

You can't have a branch meeting with the whole branch there.
Excluding AGM's of course.
Reps have their meetings then individual offices have theirs.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
