A cleaning company is planning to cut staff sick pay after being forced to knock £1.5million off Royal Mail's bill.

Romec, a joint venture between Royal Mail and Balfour Beatty, also wants to slash redundancy payments.

The firm employs about 4,500 workers cleaning Royal Mail buildings and helping maintain machinery.

But director John Fisher wrote to managers outlining cuts which reduce sick pay for staff with less than two years' service to the legal minimum.

In the letter, seen by Your Money, he says the firm beat last year's profit target despite the tough economy. But he says Romec, which also works for Asda and the BBC, "agreed to discount our services (by £1.5m) to secure an extension" to the Royal Mail contract.

He admits work shortages meant nearly £1m a year was paid to people with little to do.

Union leaders branded the proposals a "sick joke". Brian Scott, Unite national secretary, said: "Members are furious.

"If a worker is sick they won't get paid for the first three days. The effect will be workers crawling into work when they should be in bed."
