Think its more a matter of when not if! We've been told if you won't or can't drive you may be redeployed to another office.

Re: van sharing (park & loop)
I'm pretty sure we'll be firmly encouraged to grab the sh*tty end of the stick.
Bearing in mind that our contracts don't specify that we should be able to drive, I hope nobody treats us in a discriminatory manner because we are unable to do so. That would be a huge own goal.

Re: van sharing (park & loop)
The Truth! wrote this in another thread I can't gaurantee it's accuracy, judge for yourselves.
"First things first there will be agreed guidelines for the introduction of car derived vans. Secondly some indivuduals who make a decison now that they wont drive a vechicle in the future may change their mind when they realise that will restrict what job they can do in the future.
Once an office has a delivery method revison and all offices will have one then there will only be 3 modes of delivery , 1, HCT , 2. Powered HCT or car dervived vans for walks further than a mile from the office. No other method of delivery will be allowed from then on. ie no bikes no HCTs past a mile or the use of private cars.
Now the way the guidelines propose things should happen is everyone is first asked the following questions on a one 2 one basis
Home address
current use of private cars on delivery
current travel arrangements to work
any disability or other significant needs
whether indivduals hold a driving lience
whether indivduals are willing to drive a Royal Mail vehicle
In addition the manager should also identify the following on a general basis
current availablity of private parking at the office
public transport arrangements to the office
parking availabiltiy near to the office
future availability of private parking on Royal Mail premises.
This information will assist in planning future solutions.
With regards to how duties will be allocated in future on car derived vans then the following is in Royal Mail`s guidelines.
1. Duties should be divided driving and non driving.
2. People covered by the DDA should be offered suitable duties as a priority in the process of the re-pick
3. Driving duties will be restricted to existing and volunteer new drivers and non -driving duties will be restricted to non -drivers only.
4. A driver is needed for every shared van pair. Only one non-driver can pick into a shared van duty pair.
5. Shared van partners without driving liences will be restricted to 50% or less of the total number of shared van partners.
6 The cover and leave reserve for the shared vans must be drivers to ensure that the van can be taken out each day
The guidelines also cover all the following
Matching people to job requirements
removal of support duties
Dealing with drivers who invalidate themseves from driving ie alchool or drugs , medical conditons or driving offences.
Shared van: people confilicts
Leave arrangements
retained van recovery and leave
Shared vans :vechile accountablity
Allocating employee to vehicles to be retained overnight
Staff no longer able to park private cars on site
There is a section where indivudual needs are taken into account and where pratical this can take be agreed."

Re: van sharing (park & loop)
I have worked as a postie for 20 years, and as a cwu rep as well, we have just moved to a office 11 miles away,it been tough for all of us, there was thirty of us now there is 135 postman, we have to crew bus to a location where we used to be, we store our bikes there, the boss told me we are all getting new bikes, and there is no money for vans, so yes some bike rounds are remaining, because it's cheaper to have bikes delivering than vans, the problem we have is the non-drivers, when they finish they go home, while we have to take the crew bus back and their stuff 739's etc, so we work an hour more a day, my boss said he would never employ a non-drivers, it does cause alot of problems.

No offence but your boss's point about no money for vans is a non starter.
The money has all ready been spent on the vans and they are already sitting in a field waiting for the go-ahead.
Allegedly as many as 10,000 of them.
Bikes will only be used where there is no other viable option.

Re: van sharing (park & loop)
We've been doing park and loop for about a year now. Gotta say it's okay, takes the weight off your shoulders and straight onto delivery without waiting for transport.
Our town deliveries use HCT's and deliveries near the office still go out on vans. Thing to look out for is sharing with someone who is slow or you don't get on with. We have a few who don't get on and allowed to go out seperately. Also bare in mind that you have to take ALL packets and use a PDA. Now this takes you longer and some of our duties have bulked up already to 4hr-4hr 30min delivery span. Some of this is to do with pegasus implimentation not being done i guess when we got the vans. So, some people still get back early leaving quite a few of us fending off managers hiding the overtime sheet. Us having to estimate the day before, and managers just being as awkward as possible not to pay overtime. Also working to time is made as difficult also with managers doing everything in their power not to let you work to time. However, we went on strike over vans as there was no policy ie:-
What happens of you have an accident
no extra time for packets and using PDA's
The driver getting no extra pay for added responisbility for driving over non driver
what happens if you don't want to drive/refuse
breakdowns, Don't know how much or where they got these vans from but i've had 4 breakdowns in a year.
What happens if you want to work to time (if you can), and the other guy doesn't.
Think i've covered most things.

OMG common sense has slipped into a RM document - the world must be about to end.5. Shared van partners without driving liences will be restricted to 50% or less of the total number of shared van partners.
6 The cover and leave reserve for the shared vans must be drivers to ensure that the van can be taken out each day
Although it looks as if you want to have a fixed duty just refuse or be unable to drive.

Postal1 do you actually park and loop though,or is it just a moblie pouch box.
Also how was it sorting out the loops,if you do loop that is.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: van sharing (park & loop)
No we do park and loop. actually the loops work our really well. Think it was management and staff that sorted the loops out. Mind you, you get some chancers that want to do their own delivery themselves when out because theirs is the easy one out of the twoPOSTMAN wrote:Postal1 do you actually park and loop though,or is it just a moblie pouch box.

you seem a bundle of fun how much discrimination against older members prevails in your officePostal1 wrote:We've been doing park and loop for about a year now. Gotta say it's okay, takes the weight off your shoulders and straight onto delivery without waiting for transport.
