An open letter to the Editor of 'This is Money' by IPS

Can you please explain to me how you employ people like Becky, and how you, as an apparent 'Editor' allowed this work of fiction to appear on your website? It is a complete fabrication to say that Postmen and Women will be getting more money for less work. The actual facts of the matter are that we will be working harder and longer for a reduction in pay. I know these facts might not make a good article, but if you continue to go down the road you are going, you might as well work for the Beano.

I really do not know how much more 'wrong' this article could be, but I will try and correct you on a few points. For starters, I have attached the agreement for you as clearly you have not read it, neither has Becky.

Under the old agreement, delivery personal were paid per item for delivering door to door items. On average they were paid around 2-4p per item depending on the leaflet and location. On an average round (600 calls, and 3 leaflets maximum per house) a postie earned around £36 per week extra delivering these items. Under the new agreement they are paid £20.60 (pro-rata) for an 'UNLIMITED' amount of junk mail leaflets - basically as many business customers as Royal Mail can attract. Even if they were to deliver 3 they would still be down £16 a week. Part time employees with the pro-rata system in place would actually lose a lot more money, for doing more demanding work. Any Full Time early shift allowances (around £12) have also been lost, all included in this Delivery 'supplement' of £20.60.

The bonuses you mentioned were all part of a previous system called the Colleague Share Scheme, they have been re-branded, reworded and slipped into the agreement for short-sighted people like yourselves to lap up. Correct me if I am wrong but taking away with one hand and giving the same amount with the other is not more pay.

Of course the agreement also mentions longer Saturdays, 100% call rates and unlimited delivery spans which could, in theory, have us delivering mail for around six hours a day. (Have you ever tried walking for six hours with a heavy pouch on your shoulder, or does a trip to the local Starbucks wear you out?). The current delivery span at present is three and a half hours. By my book, right wing journalists aside, that's working harder and longer for less pay. As for these pay rises, it will take all three years worth for us to be in the same position as we are now. In reality that means no real term pay rises for Postmen and Women for around five years.

Delivery Postmen and women mostly want nothing to do with this agreement and do not want to be pushing unlimited junk mail through customers letterboxes. Most posties I know want to provide a service and not let management take away the personal side to the job. The strikes in 2008 were about working conditions, public service and having the pride in our jobs taken away by European capitalists, intent on wrecking the service, and certainly not about pay as you claim.

' The Daily Mail has now accepted the allegations were "entirely false".

Michael Parkinson accepts £25000 libel damages from the Daily Mail.

And Kate Winslet accepted libels damages of £25000 after an "offensive" claim in the Daily Mail said she had publicly lied about her exercise regime.

And -

The Daily Mail has paid American casino tycoon Sheldon Adelson a whopping £4 million ($8.06m) in libel damages after accusing the chairman and chief executive of Las Vegas Sands Corp of “cut-throat, ruthless and despicable” business practises.

Associated Newspapers, publishers of the Daily Mail, admitted that some of the more damning allegations were untrue and unfounded. They apologised to Adelson and agreed to pay the damages.

Adelson vowed to donate the £4 million damages to the Royal Marsden cancer hospital in London.

I found all this by a few minutes research so why are these journalists - especially Daily Mail who Beck Barrow writes for - so bloody useless. Could there be a political agenda from a newspaper that openly supported Hitler before the Second World War?

This is a personal opinion piece which means I can get away with it much as another of their writers Jan Moir did over Stephen Gately. The term rag does not do this newspaper justice.

I have edited it a few times and I may write a similar piece for people that think we are in line for massive payments. We have new posters here, some called "Lazy and Rich" and I think these people need to be set straight about this matter and more importantly about this agreement which I, and most posties want nothing to do with.

Too bloody right, it doesn't. Yet another deal that if left go, will just see our jobs deteriorate even more than they have already. I had high hopes of Dave Ward being our Bob Crowe, but a comparison to that Norwegian Traitor during the second world war, Quisling, would be more apt. :evil/mad
