Re: How can CWU have REPS advising NO?
As a unit Rep, I will be pushing for a no vote. This agreement does not meet the aspiarations of my colleagues, HQ should hang their heads in shame if after 4 months this is all they can come up with. I was told that the I.A we took was a fight to keep a union voice in the workplace, if this gets in that voice will be reduced to a sqeak, and HQ wonder why we are losing a 1000 members a week?

Re: How can CWU have REPS advising NO?
There will be many reps supporting the vote and many opposing, thats only right and fitting in a democratic union.
Now we could have a long debate on the rights and wrongs of collective responsibilty, but basically I regard the local branch being the true authority . I would expect that my branch will have a meeting to discuss this "deal" at some length and that meeting will determine the branches policy towards the vote in the form of a recommendation. I would expect all those taking part to abide by that collective decision and that would include reps as well as branch officials anyone who disagreed can of course resign and follow there own path, but we have to be responsive and in any given locality speak with one voice.
This vote has far reaching effects on the business as a whole for years to come, we can reject it and my first thoughts are to reject. I think it stinks and how can anyone predict the rate of inflation in three years
let alone all the other guff. I was not privvy to what was discussed and neither where most of you, one thing I am sure we all know about is the state of the business and the drop in mail volumes through mail centres and RDCs.
However...........................
If we reject we will have to out on the cobbles again and maybe stay out for some time in the economic climate we are in at the moment, with an election looming, with public opinion wavering against us. The final thing is that RM will simply impose this deal anyway, without the sweetners and maybe close more MCs and quicker, we are simply too far down the road now. We lost this when we backed away before Christmas, the union actually achieved a lot we got them talking again. The union has to try and secure as many jobs and get the best deal it can in regards to pay and conditions, the world is changing and we can not turn the clock back. I just do not think we could win and we will end up worse off, finacially and job wise the fight is not in enough people now.
Its a matter of choice now vote for it and be dammed or vote against and be dammed ................ and some

It's a resounding NO in our office also... This so-called deal is an absolute disgrace.

Re: How can CWU have REPS advising NO?
"End of the road" - you do have a point, if we reject this deal and opt for strike action I fear it could be a bloody battle and RM will probably impose conditions and make more job cuts because people "will" go elsewhere for delivery services (it might cost them more but it will get there rather than be held up for weeks on end). We would end up going out on strike for a long time and for what - keeping D2D payments? A bigger bonus? Ask yourself what you would want and think about it.. We had a strong position before Christmas and we ended up with this deal, we would need to be in that position again, considering the union walked away from that strike position to give us this I believe an even greater number of union members will break the strike because they have lost faith in the union.
I'm still undecided about my vote, as much as I hate parts of the deal I can't see what else we will get - lets face it, it's taken 4 months for the union to get this!!! I find it hard to believe they would be capable of getting anything more from RM, they are obviously out of touch with us and without wholesale replacement of all top-level union we are up s**t creek.
I've got to weigh up the cost of going out on long-term strike against the extra's we 'might' get.
Yes or no? Either way we stand to lose out.

yeah great idea..... then we do not even have the chance to vote either for or against the offers on the table, being in the union is not just about the decisions high up its the support (you should) be getting at a local area in your workplace as well.
If you had your way and everyone come out the union and they closed down try negotiating your own terms and conditions with the managers

I notice that you come from Mail Centres/Processing so your viewpoint be be very different to that of a walking postman. Most of the big changes and paycuts are aimed the delivery postman, we need to send a message back to CWU HQ that we will not accept this pile of crap.End of the road wrote:There will be many reps supporting the vote and many opposing, thats only right and fitting in a democratic union.

Ahebban wrote:CWU Unit Reps are in an unenviable position. When the industrial action was finally called it was expected that Unit Reps would rally their office to support HQ's position. Unit Reps would again be expected to support HQ now. However, the terms, needs and aspirations of members have not been met by this proposed Agreement .. that much is abundantly clear.
As Unit Rep, I was unsure of my stance as to whether I should rally the Office behind HQ or not and support the negotiations following the industrial action. It is not a pleasant experience having to cajole members into supporting industrial action on the understanding that HQ will deliver on their commitment to members.
Yes, HQ have delivered, but sadly it is not what I and many others had hoped for. I feel let down, my colleagues feel let down, and I can honestly say that I shall be encouraging members to vote against this Agreement and damn the consequences.

Re: How can CWU have REPS advising NO?
The biggest problem is that the people representing us on delivery in these negotiations wont have to perform the job they have agreed to. WE WILL. They are totally out of touch with us foot soldiers its unbelievable. Any unit rep on delivery worth his salt could never support this agreement.

This is completely wrong, reps are there in order to represent the feelings of their fellow workers, not toe the HQ line and sell the deal to us.
