If HQ is successful in shoehorning in an unpopular deal.
What will be the long term price the CWU pay.
It's all very well securing your position in the workplace.
But if reps outnumber ordinary members what is the point. :hmmmm

Wednesdays and Thursdays briefings will be a key event as for every 1 of you guys who will analyse the deal cover to cover there are 10 that will (a) just look at short term things like lump sums or (b) seek the opinion of their reps (s).

Hopefully the reps will be the ones who read it and give their honest and unbridled opinion. The lump sums are a joke and people will not be so easily swayed this time, so if Ward and Co think this will be a shoe in..............................good luck to them.
99% of reps will read it but where the briefing is key is that the average member will see the document and in reality see a lot of words but no background information etc. The reps at the briefing will be able to questions the officers, listen to a lowdown on why certain decisions were made and whether we like it or not this could and no doubt will influence SOME reps into getting behind the agreement.

It may not be what you want to hear but it is true.

I also agree that the lump sums are not head turning but the sad truth is that some people will have already spent that money as soon as they see it!

The securing the Unions role in the workplace v supposedly selling delivery members short on pay is a very interesting one.

I can say with 100% certainty that RM would have happily given a pay hike in return for what they have given in in the 'unions role in the workplace' - agreed revision tools, agreed work standards, an agreed revision process, an agreed rationalisation framework etc because without these things and without the Unions 'role' they would have made far more money by continuing to expose units locally!

I am not saying it is right to have a winners/losers environment because it isn't but it is also wrong to avoid the point that having the Union at the centre of the workplace protects the membership.

I'd just LOVE to hear what the background information is and exactly how this could possibly sway someone into getting behind this agreement. You see to me there is absolutely nothing in this agreement for the rank and file - what it does do is perpetuate the union as a negotiating body without any intention to represent the membership and that is the sham this union has become because it is only important for the union to be in the workplace IF they are representing its members.
They have sold the membership out for its own ends.

If you cannot see that there is 'anything' in the agreement for the membership then you really are not giving an honest appraisal.

OK I can't - please point out the salient points in the agreement that benefit the membership.

Lovejoy, I would be interested to know if you think Royalmail will honour the things you mention above? If yes, what makes you convinced? also, will the agreed elements be based on fair and realistic workloads? I think the big problem after 2007 is that most posties don't trust Royalmail to abide by agreements. For me personally fair and achievable workloads is just as important as pay.

we were wanting a "national agreement" which couldnt be" mis-interpeted"by devious managers. and what we have is vague ,wishy-washy statements. our office had Executive Action imposed on us last year, very few hours have been put back into our office since. we know all the so called safeguards regarding delivery standards, health and safety and postpersons physical ability will be ignored. even something as simple as "no private cars on delivery" isnt in this agreement

Lovejoy, speaking as somebody who basically does the job "properly" (as advocated by CWU HQ) and I generally work to my time, can you tell me what I will gain from this deal?

d2d into workload - protecting jobs (and don't give the it wont happen in my Do reply as it is not anyone's fault if your colleagues wont stand up for themselves)

a SWW - it may only be an hr but in a revision this will save 1 in 40 jobs and with the reduction that RM are planning this will help

Improved MTSF terms for VRs and travelling

An agreed 6 step revision process with your rep involved every step of the way - This is in stark contrast to where we are now

Agreed work standards. revision tools which will be ready to roll out with the vote.

I could go on and will do when the 'final' doc is published tomorrow - time allowing etc.

I am not saying its the best or in fact worst deal ever - all i am saying is that there should be a balanced view taken and yours of there are 'no benefits' isn't.

Please don't come back with the it won't happen in my unit answer - I think its already been pointed out that it s funny that people on here are happy to slag off the union but can't even stand up to a pathetic DOM when it comes to claiming OT and making sure agreements are adhered to.

2. VR's open to more of the membership

3. vauge 'commitments' on performance standards.

4. Oppertunity for retraining for staff to become technisions for the new walk sequencing machines, apprentaships including mature staff.

enlighten me if i'm missing anything else.

lots of other things against Lovejoy not least abolishen of delivery spans! on that it's self is a no from me.
