The truth! wrote:I dont think it is, surely you have to have the support of your own Branch. By that you have to have done some representation of the members within your office and the wider Branch. To simply stand for a national position on the basis of your comments on Royal Mail chat is no criteria at all. Everyone can identify the problems but its having the solutions that makes the difference.
The support of other Branches is important as its the members who get the vote but every Branch recommends the candidate that they think is best for the union, if they dont know the candidate then they really dont know what that person stands for and what he has done to achieve what he stands for.
It is not dictatorship as John Keggie and others found out to their cost in the past.
keggie got ousted by london for not doing seperate deals for London, Keggie was trying to make deals for the whole country and not 1 area, that is how Hayes got in power
Fishtank that is so wrong. John got elected on the back of his employee agenda stance to the DGSP. However the way forward was why he got defeated. The first agreement was rejected , we had a consultation exercise and a special conference. However he never kept to the conference amendments and then put a new agreement to the membership which got carried.
The members never forgave him. Keggie surived a no confidence motion by just one Branch`s vote and after a recount. He stood against Billy Hayes for GS and believe me even Billy was shocked when he won. John Keggie then refused to address London weighting and caused a lot of problems.
But it is not true to state John lost because he fell out with London. John Keggie lost because people from up and down the country voted for Dave Ward.
To me the question would be simply that if I am taking what in effect is a pay cut then my union subs would go someway to making up what I have lost weekly. I've been in this union for over 40 years and this will be the first time that I have ever had a deal that involved losing money! Yes, I have heard that some will be winners under this agreement but we should not have any damn losers, we all pay our union dues, (well for the time being). Yes we all know things had to change but a union that negotiates for less pay for some of its members? Now I know I am getting to old for the job.

At the very least, don't go, until you've voted NO.

absolutely...and while you are at it, make sure you vote for anyone on the PEC other than the negotiators who are/were.......Noel McClean? Mark Baulch?
Who else?
Send them back on delivery.....get them fit to deliver again....get them involved in the race to the bottom that they have instigated.......

They are probably the best two PEC members of the lot so it just shows that you have a chip on your shoulder. I've no issue responding to any debate but take your cheap shots elsewhere....

I always have to laugh when I see people post "We are the union" - which of course is a load of codswallop - we are merely the cash cow. If you read the agreement you will see that there is ample space given to the continued release for "essential union business" and that the finances will be put on a more substantial footing - not too difficult to see whose best interests have been served is it.
