After looking at the agreement, I would not advise anyone to become a CWU rep. If you do this, your hands will be tied. What we need in every workplace are unofficial reps who will keep their workmates informed of what is going on, will scrutinise everything that the official collaborator reps do, and will use the grievance procedure when necessary.
Everyone needs to realise that the new agreement means you can no longer trust your reps. Believe me, after trying to operate under the new system, the decent reps will resign and be replaced by rats.
The golden rule when dealing with people you don't trust is to deal with them in writing. This includes your reps, gone.
Disagree with you there Minister im a rep and im far from being part of the managerial structure. I would never consider drinking with management or socialising with them on any level.
As a rep your hands are far from tied i keep the members i represent fully informed of all on goings and i scrutinise all managerial decision if i get no joy from them i allways go to disagreement R/M management will not recognise any un-offical representitive and will ride rough shot over the work force.
Im rather offended how you can honestly say not to trust your unit rep obviously you have had a bad experience of a bad rep in the past and your not willing to give other reps the benefit of the doubt.
Please dont tar us all with the same brush for the last couple of years reps have come under a major attack by R/M and considering this we have all done a thankless job ( We do not look for thanks from our members we rep to defend them). Remember R/M tactics over these last couple of years have been to destroy the union but they will not succeed has your current or previous reps never made your work place better regardless of how big or small the change has been.
