Diss man's shock at post card arrival 20 years late

s debate rages about the future of the Post Office and Royal Mail, one Diss man this week was able to form his own opinion on the efficiency of the postal service.
He received a postcard which had taken 20 years to be delivered.

The 'snail mail' card, which arrived on Monday, was postmarked July 6, 1990.

It was sent to Derek Saunders at Heywood Road, Diss, by his friend Marcia Laws, of Thorpe St Andrew, Norwich, during a holiday in Jersey.

Mr Saunders has been in touch with Mrs Laws to let her know her postcard had finally arrived.

He said: "The post lady who delivered it noticed the date on the card and we had quite a laugh about it. It is rather intriguing as to where it has been all this time."

Delivery was considerably more prompt for another letter he received recently which came from his son in New Zealand and took just five days to arrive.

Mr Saunders is more than qualified to make a judgement on the efficiency of the postal service as his late father, Duncan Saunders, was a postman in the Banham area for 42 years.

"The postmen used to turn their postbags inside out to make sure nothing was left inside at the end of the round," he said.

"My father also used to deliver on Christmas mornings and I used to help him, and when I worked in Norwich, I could post a Christmas card to my parents as I left work at 10pm on Christmas Eve and they would receive it on Christmas morning."
