Nail hit smack on the head there.

Brother-in-law worked at NWDC and got an early shift via seniority, but it was a Tues-Sat attendance. Better than the crap duty he had before, so he accepted it even though he'd prefer Mon-Fri hours.

Someone junior to him got the last available Tues-Sat duty, but within weeks the junior man was asking for 'family friendly' hours, as he couldn't work Saturdays due to childcare issues (his wife works Saturdays in a nursing home). Management agreed to the request, and put the junior man on a Mon-Fri duty and put his Saturday hours up on the board for anyone to sign for as ad-hoc overtime :mad

Next thing you know, the family friendly guy starts coming in Saturdays on overtime :no no

RM management mantra: Divide and rule !!!!!!
there are ways they could allocate family friendly duties discreetly to these junior men, I would not be to happy about, but like I said, there’s nothing we can do about, but the way they want to do it at ndc, will cause low morale and possibly big trooooble amongst drivers who have family friendly and those who don’t. This is the way they want to do it ndc,
resigns starts in blocks of ten, number 1, 2 and so forth sign for duties, if number 8 or any driver who hadn’t signed but wanted family friendly hours and somebody had already signed for a duty that suited there family/domestic situation, guess what, they can have that duty and the senior driver who had signed for that duty is kicked off it into the wilderness !!!
NOW YOU CAN SEE THE HILTER STLYE MANAGMENT THAT WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH AT NDC DAVENTRY
This way of family friendly allocation stinks of playground stuff, where you used to chuck money in the air and the biggest and the strongest use to win all the money, only in this case its the management chucking the duties in the air.
At ndc we are the aircraft carrier of royal mail, and if ndc management 'sink us' then watch out because this management style will be turning up at your office before you can say tnt

They do

Moan about working certain days due to Family commitments so they get duty alterations to suit and then within a short time they appear on O/T.

When I started 25 year ago we got whatever we got in duties/o/t/shifts/leave I spent years seeing my two boys for a few minutes Mon- Sat and I kept Sundays free for them. Getting leave with them on school hols was difficult in the early years. Saturday finishes could be 20:00 on a regular basis, but I like so many took it because we respected the system and we could see it worked. The job pays the wages and to a certain extent we all have to work around it and compromise other things, I can no longer follow my favourite team because I am on duty when the play home matches. Too many people join RM and expect the whole job to revolve around them, it does not I am affriad. Then job is in flux again at the moment and changes are coming if we like them or not they are coming and we have to get the best out of it for everyone not just the vocal minority who wnat everything there way.

For the times they are a-changin' - Bob Dylan!

you mention 25 years ago, the RM has changed in that time and has to follow the government rules and regs. Family Friendly is just one such rule.

So if you had family now, and FF doesn't just mean kids, it could be an elderly parent, would you turn down the chance to do what other are doing now? It is poor management that allows the situation of FF jumping to the best jobs. Seniority is slowly being eroded away.

I have FF and had to cut down from 40 to 30 hrs otherwise it was a case of "on your bike". So not everyone gets the plum jobs!

If the chap who comes in on a Saturday on O/T has FF, challenge management as it is a change to the terms of his FF contract and the whole FF situation can be halted if his circumstances has changed. (Has to be agreed by bothy parties though :whistle ). But depends whether the managers were clever enough to put it all down in the contract!

As I understand it, the case for FF in a duty is NOT for someone to be given an easy duty but for a chosen duty to be tailored to the individuals need - ie, the repick goes ahead as normal, the FF guy picks in turn and then that duty is tailored to suit his needs - which seems fair enough.

If you are with in a mile of start of your duty with no big hills you will use a HCT!. If not park and loop will be the preferred option for royal mail.

Whats happening with all the boxes then? Also a HCT in a deprived area is only asking for it

Thats it,its nothing to do with easier duties
In an ideal world, yes i would agree with that, but at ndc it is not a ideal world, what management want to do is cause bad feeling amongst the driver. what they want to happen at ndc is as follows: - when the resign starts, if it gets to somebody who wants family friendly hours and they see a duty THAT SOMEBODY HAS ALREADY SIGNED FOR and it suits their domestic situation, then that duty will be taken off the senior driver and given to the junior/family friendly driver........and the senior man is left in limbo, what’s friendly about that??????? This situation actually happened at ndc 2years ago in a resign, and guess what there were a few unhappy people, but this is what the senior mangers want at ndc

That is quite simply not even bad management - its lazy management. Instead of sitting down and getting a fair deal for both the parties involved, or revising the duty of the FF guy, they took the option of least work, parachuting a guy into a duty that works for him, and bouncing the incumbent. So its 2 minutes work as opposed to a few hours, they then just sit back and hope the guy who has been bounced does not complain for too long.

Lazy Managers, sometimes are worse than incompetent ones.

I don t want to shaft anybody in our office by requesting a ff duty

But i need to pick the kids up after school and i want RM to honour their so called family friendly policy

There isnt a duty in the office I would turn down if it let me finish on time

They could leave me out of any resign and lump me with the duty that no one wants

All the dutys are crap anyway

FAMILY FRIENDLY POLICY THEIR WORDS NOT MINE :confused :confused :confused

at ndc, they are using the drivers to shaft one another, by the system they are using, there are other DISCREET ways they could allocate ff, but no, thay are using the drivers, so everybody knows who shafted who, then the backbiting begins, bad feeling, low morale, etc etc etc, its just another stick they are using to beat and demoralise us with, they have tried in the past using various methods and failed, this time the stick has family friendly written on it
