Postmen could get 'peace deal' to end Royal Mail dispute

Posties could get more money and a shorter working week as part of a deal to end the bitter dispute at Royal Mail.

Management and unions are inching closer to what is believed to be a landmark three-year deal on pay and modernisation. The Communication Workers Union's 17-strong national executive committee is due to meet today to consider the latest proposals thrashed out between the two sides over the weekend.

If they are willing to accept the deal - an outcome that is by no means certain - it would be put to a ballot of the union's 130,000 members which could take up to a month.

Workers could be offered a lump sum up front as a sweetener for backing the agreement as well as three years of pay rises.

A deal would enable Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier to leave for his new job running ITV on a high, collecting a bonus of up to £2million.

In return for cash and a reduction in the 37-hour week, the CWU is likely to be forced to concede major changes to its members' working conditions.

These are likely to include the introduction of more high-speed sorting machines which will result in sweeping job losses. Royal Mail has already got rid of more than 60,000 staff in the past five years as new technology has been introduced.

But the two sides will also need to reach agreement on how modernisation will be introduced.

A feeling among the workforce that management was bulldozing through its ideas without agreement created a lot of anger and fuelled the walkouts in the run-up to Christmas.

The full damaging impact of that strike chaos was revealed at the weekend when figures showed that Royal Mail had missed almost all of its delivery targets in the autumn.

The worst performance for a decade, in which 25% firstclass letters were delivered late, could mean the firm having to pay a huge fine.

The Mirror also revealed last month that Royal Mail was planning to sack around 1,200 managers.

Flippn' hope the Union does not concede to a major change in our working coditions ---thay are intolearable already!
but, of course we are nudging towards the election date--said all along things won't be resolved before then. Can almost gaurantee things won't be resolved before than, but I fear we are doomed.

Sure I heard on one of the t.v. channels today that Wee Addie takes official control of ITV from April 26th.

Thats a bit tight for him to affect the election strategy for ITV.
