We had this with one 30+ year man who was told he wasn't working fast enough on prep although there is no agreed rate for this. He said something along the lines of "fk this for a game of soldiers " and has now been off sick with stress for a month and showing no sign of returning. Some of these managers should be in the SS. oh and as a matter of interest on Saturday was delivering items posted on september 2nd and 3rd. Their bullying and intimidation is really working well - as usual :mfo

Personally, I don't mind being watched, as long as I can't see them. Because when there's someone there. Usually with arms folded, watching, and waiting for you to make a mistake. It makes me nervous, and I run the very real risk of actually MAKING a mistake. Luckily (or unluckily, depending on your point of view) we have Security Cameras, all over the building (I work indoors). So there's no need for them to watch us in person.

I know that there are some people who don't like it. Particularly as they have recording equipment. They promised that they wouldn't actually record any footage, unless it's for an IB investigation. But does anyone trust RM anymore?
I don't!

Now I find this situation much better. Because I know that I pull my weight, and I'm good at what I do. So there's nothing that they'll be able to criticise me for. And as I don't have someone stood watching me, I don't get nervous. So I can just get on with it. :hmmmm

In truth i dont think anyone likes to be watched so Intensely as I also find that it does put a lot of pressure on me to make a mistake. I prob wouldn’t mind so much on my own frame as I know it backwards but I would find it very intimidating on a strange frame or duty.
It’s a pointless exercise just used to induce harassment and achieves nothing other than causing a growing resentment which may have not been their to start with.
I am glad to say at the moment its not going on in my office. I was hoping never to hear of this sort of thing again thinking it had been stopped after the Sawyer Report, but alas looks like I was wrong

For people who have worked hard and are used to trusting those they work with, it comes as a shock when your manager displays behaviour inconsistent with his or her hierarchically superior status. We are all human, have the occasional bad day, and make mistakes. With bullying the 'off days' and 'mistakes' happen with increasing frequency and regularity, and we become aware that the person's judgement, especially about us, our work or our behaviour, is inconsistent with our own perceptions and feedback from colleagues and, perhaps, customers and clients. It's now that our own levels of confidence take on a greater importance.

Are we sufficiently alert to recognise that the feedback we are receiving is at variance with the feelings and observations of ourselves and others? Do we have sufficient faith in ourselves to override our bosses' opinion of us? And if so, for how long can we carry on without support in this type of management environment? The ability to trust one's own judgement is severely tested, with the bully employing a subtle but effective technique. A criticism is made, or a shortcoming highlighted, in which there is a grain of truth. When analysed, it is perhaps only 5% true. Unfortunately, inexperience and low confidence in the area of receiving and responding to criticism mean that the assessment is perceived as 95% accurate.

If we are inclined to suffer feelings of guilt - and people who are prone to being bullied seem to be born with their predisposition to guilt set too high - the criticism is reinforced to a degree which only the greatest maturity can override. The bully often adds guilt to the criticism, for example "I'm disappointed", "...letting me/the side/the unit/the office/the business down...".

He or she also injects his or her own insecurity which is then transferred to the victim. On the surface, all sounds credible, but over time, one has the growing suspicion that something is awry. The bully is adept at minimising discrepancy, and "open discussions" will often elicit statements of support which confuse, with the result that guilt is intensified.

Criticism especially when unjustified, and from a supposed 'elder and better', needs to be handled with maturity and assertiveness. Without these, our reaction can contain more emotion than sense. Bullies then feed on the immature emotional response as justification for making the criticism. Only high assertiveness combined with strong nerves (high self-confidence) can rebuff such superior censure.

A characteristic of a manager unable unable to fulfil the duties of the job is a random element in decision making. There is long and tortuous argument over small unimportant issues, but when a bigger issue presents itself - perhaps the spending of a large sum of money on a product or service whose benefit is not clear - the decision is waved through without a secong glance. This inappropriate level of attention warns alert observers that the manager lacks ability, but for victims of bullying the authorisation may come as a welcome respite, especially if they are the beneficiary. It may also be mistaken as support and approval.

Such unpredictability permeates the bully's behaviour, resulting in confusion and irritation amongst staff. Whilst mostly negative, the odd positive behaviour appears on rare occasions when the bully feels good about him or herself. Most of the time the bully feels frightened, insecure, afraid that he or she will be 'found out', and consequently seems to exude a form of paranoia; it's as if the bully chooses to believe that the victim is putting on an act and plotting against him or her to usurp his or her position.

In the majority of cases, the opposite is the case. Ironically in most cases, the bully has sufficient skills to undertake his or her job successfully, but chooses not to apply them.

Pressure from above is another common cause of bullying; the company may have difficulty competing, and profit forecasts are low or negative. Or resources and funding may have been cut again. The insecurity of senior staff is communicated down the management hierarchy through aggressively over-assertive behaviour. People react to this treatment in various ways; they can either pass it on and bully their own staff, or they can absorb it, protecting staff from the harmful effects of negative management.
"Today’s workplace has become heartless and soulless. Employees are seen as units of labour, automatons, functionaries, objects for achieving designated tasks, and as costs to be minimised."

Across street, another postie doing part of same cut-off witnessed it too. Later found out, ANOTHER postie was doing different part of the round.
( This whole section only takes bout 20 - 30 mins for 1 person.)

When I raised it, and it got back to him, excuse of asst manager was,"I was helping to deliver the cut offs too."

Funny thing was, no mail in his private car, and he drove off after realising he was well sussed out. LOL!

Harrassment, victimisation, or maybe he fancies me!

My goodness, surely this is absolutely unacceptable and must be illegal? Surely the IB has cameras there purely to observe theft or terrorist activities? Are they really recording to see if people are leaving early, starting late, talking, fooling around, not carrying duties out correctly or having coffee on the floor?? I'm no expert but I can't see how RM could possibly use any video footage collected in this way (IB or covert mobile phone recording) as evidence to discipline staff for work rates etc... I to work in a MC and would hate to think the cameras up on ceiling are watching for to slack off or do something wrong. In fact I feel quite different about them now. Who exactly has access to the cameras at work? Do Managers have access to these cameras and what they record? Do I have the right to request any possible footage recorded of myself? Is there any clarification on this matter :nervous

Officially, they only record the footage if it's an IB investigation. But personally, I don't trust them not to record for the rest of the time too. I do know that I was watched, not long after I last posted in this thread. Because a Manager approached me, and commented on something I'd done. And there's no way that he could have seen me, without the cameras. Because of where I was at the time (a fairly small space, with poor visibility beyond). But whether it was recorded or not. Who knows? :hmmmm
He may have been watching the screens, without the recorder on.

That is absolutely disgraceful, I'm totally gobsmacked at this. I've certainly felt I've been working under a different light today... not nice!

Do you reckon they are taught this at "management school"
