Re: Why we think our managers are crap
When you ask them your correct start time, they don't know.
They tell you to take a 20 min break...when you are entitled to 30.
They tell you to keep your bags light and take care when it's snowing. Next day they tell you to take all of yesterdays mail as well as todays, even though today is worse.

The Parcelfarce managers at our depot are crap mainly because every time one of us asks them anything the reply is always "i'll get back to you". Then there's the unpaid overtime, blatant favouritism, no communication etc......

Why are Royal Mail managers crap?
Proactive - Anticipating events such as problems and planning ahead for them.
Reactive - Reacting to events when they occur with little to no anticipation of events.
All management must be both proactive and reactive to survive. Obviously when significant events happen it is necessary to react to them. But the reaction most of the time should be planned and well thought out. The best management is primarily proactive rather than reactive. Good management is proactive first and reactive second.
In all my years in Royal Mail i have never met a manager who even understood the concept of proactive management.

I have met some managers who were possibly radioactive.
I think they should have been solidified in concrete and put in a shallow repository.

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

When an acting manager is put back as a Postman, isn't it strange how all the issues they ignored when they were a suit is now their utmost priority, Walk to heavy, to long, no bands, no string, they don't want to work past their time and on and on!

Thought it was just our office that was a dumping ground for s**t managers, seems widespread in RM.

Re: Why we think our managers are crap
how they always assume you are taking the piss regardless ... that if you don't kill off mail, bring mail back or forget to check your boxes you're a lazy git. not that you didn't have enough time, had an appointment for that afternoon, genuinely forgot to check, respectively.
also how they bollock you if you don't sign the sign-in sheet yet are quite willing to overlook booking overtime
and oh yes if you file a grievance against them they spend their time checking up on you for opportunities to screw you over, instead of just getting on with their job. the majority are either petty malicious little thugs or brown-nosing smarmy ladder-climbing backstabbers
... in my oh-so-very humble opinion

Far be it for me to speak ill of our beloved managers, but I am inclined to agree with fishtank and categorically state, I have never met one in all my considerable time in this business who fully understands the concept and indeed their responsibilities with regards to health and safety.fishtank wrote:Why are Royal Mail managers crap?

All the management i have seen over the years were failed postmen!!!! I can count on one hand any who have had a clue about the job or staff management.I was told many years ago by one manager "i wouldn't ask a postman to do something i couldn't do myself!" my god how times have changed.

When you quote the Appendix 3 of the Conduct Code when you need to cut-off on heavy days.......The answer I get is 'What's that ? they never read any RM procedures not like the CWU rep who knows everything in our office.
