headscrewedon wrote:By the very nature of the way competition was introduced, the postal market is rigged against Royal Mail. Yes, I know the price set by RM's ineptness means we make a loss on every DSA item, but it's not a level playing-field, as our "competitors" can cherry pick the most profitable mail, and don't have to do deliveries.

As consumers, we all exercise our right to get things cheaper. Dunno about you, but I don't buy a dvd from hmv.com if it's a quid cheaper at play.com. Now if hmv can promise delivery in 2 days when play usually take, say, 5 days, then perhaps I might order from the more expensive one, hmv. BUT - and it's a crucial but - why on earth would I use hmv (and pay more as well) if I knew hmv go on strike every other year and I've no certainty of when it will be despatched ? It's a no-brainer, isn't it ? You use the competitor and you save money !

Against that background, we have Royal Mail's sales teams trying to persuade some of the biggest posters of mail in the country to not go down the DSA route, and stay loyal to RM. How do they do that, when the competition are undercutting RM on price and the main argument we can offer them to not use TNT, UK Mail, DHL etc is the reliability of our service ? It's now standard practice in most spheres of business these days that, as part of any commercial contract, companies expect financial compensation from suppliers when they fail to meet the terms of the contract as signed by both parties. Obviously, failures caused by extreme weather, acts of war, fire etc etc are considered beyond the supplier's control, and are usually excluded from the 'financial penalties' clauses.

One of RM's sales people, however, told me there are major brands out there who, when they read that Royal Mail includes strike action as one of things that is 'beyond their control', they are met with reactions ranging from incredulity to outright laughter. We will NEVER win those customers over to Royal Mail (or get them to switch back to RM) whilst our main competitive advantage is so completely undermined. And that has ramifications for jobs. Because the overall mail market is going to shrink in coming years (due to e-commerce, e-bills etc), and our only way to fight back is to grow our share of that market from current levels. NOT having a no-strike agreement is seriously handicapping RM's ability to compete, because there's whole chunks of business that we can't even get a foot in to the door to pitch for !

These protracted negotiations have shown that going to a third party can get two parties who are seemingly miles apart to come to agreement. If a process to resolve future disputes can be agreed upon by the CWU and RM, and we can avoid strikes that hamper RM's ability to win custom, I think it's what's needed to finally drag both the CWU and RM into the 21st century, and make our jobs a little more secure.
If we could trust Royal Mail and they were true to their word then maybe we could have a no strike arrangement. I refer you to the issue over pensions which at sometime in your life will become very important, they agreed to futher talks (which the union agreed to and championed to avert strike action) then imposed a new scheme by executive action with much lower benifits to it's members. They should have taken the argument to the government who were as are now the paymasters who enjoyed a 13 year pension holliday but instead they ripped us off!!! When an employer pulls strokes like this what else can anyone do with the slightest bit of back bone, other than sadly strike once negotiations have been exhausted....What else would these people implement if we had no come back. I would like to see a no strike agreement but with some one who i could trust to treat me fairly......
LUMP SUMS.... Take for example D2D (if this were to be part of the deal) i've heard a figure of £1,000 banded about the gready D... Heads amonst us start licking their lips planning how to spend their ill gotten gain... THINK :arrrghhh £1,000 equates to aprox 8 months payment at current levels of 3 D2D so after you have spent your money you will then be taking god knows how many for £ 30 a week less pay..... Lump Sums non starter for me, Include £30+ in the wage and make it pensionable now thats fair in my book...... Treat employees fairly, work together, lead by example ( e.g no managerial un realistic bonuses for just giving us loads of mail sort to take on busy days, CEO's awarding themselves 1 million+ bonus when the grass roots get nought! :no no ) give people an equal, realistic workload and you will find any reasonable employee will have no desire to strike!!!!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Let's look at how we got to this point:

The strike happened because management were breaking agreements and bullying staff.

The strike took ages to call and eventually took place at the time of year that management traditionally hired casuals that could be used as strike breakers. It was also held at the time of year that would annoy the public the most.

During the strike, a successful propaganda campaign was run portraying RM workers as piss takers who were against progress as this would mean losing their 'cushy number'.

The strike was called off with the promise that the grievances leading to IA would be addressed.

After marathon talks, we are leaked the information that everyone will have to work longer Saturdays and it will be harder to go on strike.

Who has profited most from this chain of events?

Who planned it?

Did the CWU go along with the deception or were they just too ignorant to realise they were being manipulated?

Guess you must be John Terry or Ashley Cole, then :whistle

Shouldn't you be posting in the Blue Shirts forum ? :chuckle

Seriously though, I am not a manager. I chose my moniker precisely because my views are often contrary to those of the majority of posters, and so I thought if people are going to probably assume I'm a manager, I may as well pick a name that reinforces the jumping-to-conclusions brigade.

I don't trust RM management. But after the ambiguous wording in 2007's P&M agreement which allowed RM to interpret things differently to the CWU, I'm not sure I trust them too much either.

All I'm saying is this: in the 21st century, some way has to be found to avoid strikes which damage the business that employs us. I need my job; my kids need me to keep that job, and I need to not keep p!ssing money away out on strike because the people at the top of RM and at the top of the CWU can't work together for everyone's mutual benefit ! This agreement has to tackle the industrial relations environment that is cutting us off from new contracts that big posters won't put our way because of the ever-present threat of strikes.

Think of it from a customer's viewpoint. If you could get your electricity from a cheap supplier, or a slightly more expensive one who sometimes had an interrupted supply, which one would you choose ??????????????

if you don't trust senior RM and CWU why would you want them to agree between them that your not allowed to take IA......Just because we are allowed to take IA doesn't mean we have to.
