Royal Mail could face a £650million fine after missing all its key delivery targets in the autumn when it was hit by a national strike.

The number of first class letters arriving on time fell to 78.8%, below the goal of 93% set by the regulator.

The group also missed targets for second class post, business mail deliveries and parcels.

Before the dispute over pay and pensions erupted, it was doing well.

But an industry expert said: "It means they're almost certain to miss their targets for the year."

If they do regulator Postcomm could fine Royal Mail up to £650million - 10% of turnover.

Mark Higson, boss of Royal Mail Letters, said: "We're clearly concerned that customer service was disrupted.

Discussions are still rumbling on over pay, conditions and pensions.

Oh and just out of interest if the service (i refuse to call it a business) gets fined 650mil where does that money go?

They imply that late letters are a result of the strikes but a significant proportion of them are late because staffing has been cut so much that walks routinely don't go out because especially when someone's off sick. It will be interesting to see if all are delivered on time during a quarter without strikes, but when they're not they will find some other excuse to blame the workers. and sadly too many people believe what they read in the papers.
