van sharing, can royal mail force you to drive
can royal mail force people to drive, just because they hold a valid licence?????????
the union are offering no real advice on this subject and im sure that there are plenty of posties out there like myself who only use their licence for taking the family out, or the odd run to the shops!!!
however managers all over the belfast office are of the attitude that you wont have a choice but to drive??
what is the legal side to this arguement, as royal mail did not put me through my driving test, so what right would they have to ask me to jeopardise my licence for a company who doesnt care for its staff.......

Welcome,moved to blue shirts forum.
I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

It surely depends on the job that you applied for.
Many vacancies for some time now have been for "Postman/Postwoman with Occasional Driving" as "Royal Mail are now recruiting Delivery Postmen and Postwomen who may be required to undertake occasional driving duties."
If that's the job you accepted, and it's increasingly likely that it was, then you have no choice but to drive.

How will it jeopardise your licence ? with a van it should take a lot of weight of your shoulders.

Re: van sharing, can royal mail force you to drive
They will try to intimdate and lie their way into getting people to drive, but you dont have to, its your driving license on the line not theirs. They will change the job so that new posties will be required to drive but they have to accommodate for exisiting posties not the other way round. Just tell your manager you dont have a license lol. They keep begging people to do the changeover at our office although a few bum lickers did the majority of the office told them to do 1

The date of that letter was July 2009 very strongly worded - anyone seen a reply or a follow up or any communication from the HSE - no me neither. As a matter of interest we had CDR in October 2008 - so as you can see this leadership is very much late reactive instead of proactive. They were already aware of the problem and buried their head in the sand probably until the changes were closer to home.

tbh the CWU can send as many letters as they like out,RM just ignore them.Nothing gets done, how many LTB's we seen on here about this and that and RM just don't take any notice.

Re: van sharing, can royal mail force you to drive
If your forced into driving for Royal Mail and happen to have an accident whilst driving for them, do you have to declare that accident to your own insurance company when you renew your private car insurance? Remember they ask the question "have you had an acident within the past 5 years"?
My own vehicle is mainly used at weekends nand I've never used it for work, so due to me only driving for a couple of hours, my chances of being involved in an accident are low and as a driving licence was not a requirement when I joined RM. Why the FECK should I drive for RM and run the risk of increasing my own insurance premiums for their bennfit?
