It used to be! Right through the 80s we were always a good office for taking on the bosses. Always 100% solid whenever we walked out and we never had a DOM for more than a few months at a time. Three good reps, John O'Keefe, Mick Crowley and Bob Seddon take a bow. As the 90s passed by, more and more car users looking after Number 1 and more and more whingers "What's the union ever done for me?" but not prepared to stand on the picket line in 2000 with the rest of us to get themselves a Five Day Week. These days we've got loads of compliant sheep and as a great man once said "all ye like sheep have gone astray" and like sheep before their shearers, they're dumb. We've got managers (office boys more like) who pick on quiet people and who make Ananias look a picture of truthfulness. Most of them are incapable of seeing the big picture when fifteen years ago we stood shoulder to shoulder with any other office in the area which walked out. The relationship with Warrington was particularly strong and because many of us are from there, a good relationship with Liverpool too. Most people here aren't even bothered about the person on the next frame as them now. At least they've been solid on the last two strike days and the way the managers have been acting over the last year or two and speaking to people as though they're nothing, we might see a return to the good old days when even the Evertonians were good Reds at Runcorn!

Well said runcorn lad , im the rep at our office but im standing down after this week , lots of reasons no support , staff either blaming the rep or being violent etc . OUR BRANCH IN THE CW AREA IS CRAP WITH DINOSAURS RUNNING IT .

I know them both. The Area Rep is a good lad in my opinion. I didn't have a lot to do with Gary, so I wouldn't like to comment, but he seems alright. When I became the rep at Runcorn, Bob Seddon said "You're a bulldog, but you've got rubber teeth." So I asked him what he meant. He said "You know what you're doing and what people want, but this lot won't back you. They're as useful as rubber teeth on a guard dog." And he was spot on. Ask someone to do the job properly, and it's "he's intimidating me!" from the weak willed idiots, but when they wanted their hours changed, or were pulled in because they couldn't turn in after a load of ale and had a Stage 2 or RTU, or wanted a witness while the IB went through their sock drawer, they were good union people then. There are very few people I work with who I like and would put myself out for. I could probably count them on one hand. Thatcher's children, and there are very few of them who come anywhere near the lads I worked with in RM 20 years ago, or the building sites before that. Even the managers are very poor these days compared to the first few I had in 1980 and I expect it's similar everywhere.

I used to go when I was the rep. I used to enjoy arguing with the managers. All that "this is a partnership" rubbish! This is what I wrote in an article for the IWW in 2001 and I can't see any reason to change my view.

"The way in which the Attendance Procedure has been used to drive unwell staff back to work before they are fully recovered shows a contempt for staff by management which would not be tolerated in a properly organised workplace. Those of us who are members of the Industrial Workers of the World realise the need for a union to be totally separate from the employers. The concept of partnership between employers and unions is alien to us as we believe the two sides have separate and conflicting interests. The idea of 'partnership' between boss and worker is the partnership of the mugger and the victim and we believe it is high time the thief got his just desserts."

Do you know mate, in all seriousness, I found Allan Henshall to be one of the best people to deal with whenever I went in with someone over a Stage 3. I won quite a few with him in the chair. He would always listen to the accused, and unlike Molly or Griffin could speak English without having to resort to stupid phrases like "It's not rocket science", "I'll have to touch base with Paul" or "What are the performance indicators?"
As for Mark Lawrenson, we had him as DOM years ago, but only for about nine months. I certainly had a good few arguments with him, but I never found him one to hold a grudge. In retrospect, he was one of the better managers we've had. He put about six walks in to relieve overloaded deliveries, ordered chairs for people to sit down when prepping and actually walked around the office talking to the staff unlike Gallagher who we also had. Talk about flexi-hours! Mind you, I don't go for Mark's 'new look' at all!
I also know Neil Hayes from Crewe who got into a spot of bother when that little plonker from Birkenhead (Paul somebody) tried to do him for taking A/L between Christmas and New Year after telling managers they couldn't have it. A bit of a free spirit is Neil. I remember Paul Berwick as well. Aston Villa fan.

I respect your views but lawrenson has this fashion style silly haircut and in my experience clicks his pen and is always clearing his throat , as for uncle al he dosent like to lose any argument .....

Yes, I didn't recognise Mark when he came to Runcorn a few weeks ago so I didn't speak to him. He probably thought I was being ignorant. My mate thought he looked like something from a boy band.
As for Al, we've got a lad here who has got off with three RTU's because of him. We've had worse than Al in my time. Griffin for instance! Glad to see the back of him!
