Postman resigns after dumping hundreds of letters in bin

A ROYAL Mail postman has resigned after admitting to dumping hundreds of letters in an Enfield recycling bin.

The worker, who could not be named for confidentiality reasons, gave his notice yesterday after being hauled in to speak to Royal Mail bosses.

The Enfield Independent discovered the abandoned load in a large green newspaper and magazines container outside Morrisons supermarket, off the A10, following a tip-off by a member of the public.

More than 500 pieces of paid-for mail dating back to January were found in the bin, addressed to residential and business premises in Romford, Essex.

A spokeswoman for the Royal Mail said: "We can confirm a member of staff has now resigned following this incident.

"Most of the mail was very recent, with nothing more than a few weeks old, but we are obviously concerned it reaches its destination as soon as possible.

"We are currently sorting it at our Romford office and will be sending it all out with apology notices."

The Royal Mail is currently investigating the incident. If there is sufficient evidence the mail was deliberately stolen and dumped it will report it to the police.

The spokeswoman added: "We work closely with the police. We will undertake our own thorough investigation and if there is evidence of an offence, we will report it."

A spokeswoman for Enfield police said: "The onus re the failure of mail to be delivered lies with Royal Mail.

"They will conduct their own initial investigation and if they find that there was any wrongdoing by an individual that constitutes a criminal offence, such as deliberately tampering with or delaying mail, then they will pass their findings on to the police."
