Numberless houses

Post by TrueBlueTerrier »

House numbers must be clearly displayed by law

The law requires that occupiers of premises display the house number on their property.

Numbers should be marked on a strong contrasting background and be seen clearly and visible from the roadside.

Oh dear :cry

I love it when they put both the house number and the road name on a little plaque, it's a nice little reassurance when you're delivering on a new round.

If you think it is bad in the UK, imagine what it is like for the poor posties in Japan:

Street names are seldom used in postal addresses (except in Kyoto and some Hokkaidō cities such as Sapporo), and most Japanese streets do not have names. Banchi blocks often have an irregular shape, as banchi numbers were assigned by order of registration in the older system, meaning that especially in older areas of the city they will not run in a linear order. It is for this reason that when giving directions to a location, most people will offer cross streets, visual landmarks and subway stations such as "at Chūō-dori and Matsuya-dori across the street from Matsuya and Ginza station", for a store in Tokyo. In fact, many businesses have maps on their literature and business cards. In addition, signs attached to utility poles often specify the city district name and block number, and detailed block maps of the immediate area are sometimes posted near bus stops and train station exits.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_addressing_system

* Finding a block inside a district is often very difficult. You have to wander between the blocks looking at the block number panels until you find it. Your task is easier when the map indicates the block numbers. But very often, outside central Tokyo, the map will only indicate the district name, and you'll have to find the block yourself. Or your map may be outdated...
* Inside the block, the houses are numbered according to when they were built, not to where they are located in the block. House number #32 will probably not stand by house number #33 or #34. You may have to turn around the whole block before you find it.

This what I mean 1 Castle Road, 3 Castle Road, 1 Castle Terrace, 5 Castle Road, 7 Castle Terrace (Not real names) very confusing when prepping and delivering if you don't know my duty.
Well that's cleared that up then.
Wouldn't want to throw off your duty, let alone deliver it.

As for Plainpat's "explanation" of how houses are addressed in Japan, well I shall in future count my blessings despite the 3 Yew Tree Cottages, the 2 April Cottages and the 2 Limes on my duty. I am indeed a lucky man!

It's even more confusing when you have identical addresses but for different areas (but delivered from the same office)

I covered a walk along a parade of shops, that was a friggen nightmare. Hardly any of the shops were numbered and some had flats with their entrance on the shop front others were down an alleyway full of bin bags and some were down a side road and up another alley full of bin bags binbags. Some of the shops mail was by name but then some of the shops had changed their names :(.

What about the people who simply refuse to use their house number. They tell everyone their house name (except Royal Mail) and expect every delivery person to be able to find it.

I had courier stop and ask me if I knew where 'The House' was. Yes, I replied, it's number 60, just down the road. I get there 10 mins later and he's giving the woman a piece of his mind. Don't blame him.

This is an estate with about 70 houses. About a dozen have names, but also use the numbers. Two don't bother with numbers, and anyone who doesn't know would have to walk around looking at every house for the name. I usually write a big '60' on the envelope. I'm tempted to put on a kill off stick having ticked 'incomplete address'.

It's what your supposed to do in those situations, I feel a killed off credit card bill might encourage them to affix a number to their house :)
