Roy Mayall is writing a new book and he wants to hear your stories.
Funny stories, sad stories, stories of bullying and harassment, stories of hope, stories of strength, stories that will inspire other postal workers. Any stories as long as they are real stories.
Stories of what it is like to be a postal worker in the 21st Century, in an industry that is being decimated, undermined from within and without. Union stories. Stories of solidarity and resistance. Friend's stories. Stories about the ways we help each other in our work.
I want to get a full range of the Royal mail experience, from all over the country, from rural to small town to urban industrial landscapes. I want us to give a portrait of the Royal Mail through our own experiences. I want to show the diversity if culture in the Royal Mail. Everyone is welcome. African, Asian, European; English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh.
If you have a family, what is it like to struggle on such a low wage? How does the work affect you in your daily life?
Scenes at work, some of the jokes, some of the amusing things that happen to us every day. Scenes of management incompetence and stupidity, of absurdity, such as some of the crazy new practices we are expected to take part in. Scenes out on the walk, in snow and ice and in good weather. Our relationship with our customers, and how this is being affected by the changes in our work. Conversations with the public. Conversation with family and friends.
The book will be called “Special Delivery” and it is our special delivery to all our customers, telling them what is wrong, and ways that it might be improved. We need to get the public on our side in the hard times to come. We need to start the resistance to the attacks upon our industry, and writing is my specific contribution to this. It’s what I do best. But Granny Smith told just a small part of the story: this time I want to tell the big story: the whole story, or as much as I can fit into a book.
