Train driver's ashes lost in the post for nine days

THE FAMILY of a man whose ashes have been lost in a Royal Mail bungle have demanded answers from the postal giant.

Mick Little’s remains have been missing for nine days and brother Pete says he’s not sure if they’ll ever get to bury them in the city he grew up in.

The popular train driver – nicknamed Cov Mick – died on January 16, a week after his 59th birthday because of complications arising from diabetes. He was cremated in Newquay, where he moved to be nearer his son Wayne.

The undertaker sent an urn containing Mick’s remains to his family in Coventry.

But more than a week after the urn was sent via the Royal Mail’s first-class recorded delivery service Mick has still not come home – and his family are furious with the people responsible.

“He wouldn’t want me to let them get away with it, though.

“Every time you ring you have to go through an automated service and when you eventually get through they say you have to allow a 15-day delay before you put a claim in.”

Mick grew up in Longford with brothers Pete and David before working at Chrysler and Triumph.

He went on to work as a guardsman and a train driver for British Rail, rising up the ranks of the National Union of Railwaymen in the process.

“Mick went all over the world,” Pete said. “He was always travelling – I guess he still is.

“He was a real jack the lad and when he complained he really complained.

“He took a half-empty bottle of aftershave back to Harrods once saying it didn’t last long enough.”

Pete has been keen to arrange the burial of Mick’s ashes in Coventry but says he and the family are in limbo because of the delay.

“It’s like a little cube,” Mr Henwood said. “It measures 15cm by 15cm and it’s 23cm long.

“It’s a cardboard box, wrapped in thick, clear industrial tape with a label on the front with Pete’s address and my return address on the back.”

It cost £8.90.

The Royal Mail’s tracking service says the parcel “is being progressed through our network for delivery”. When the tracking details were entered into Royal Mail’s internal system the parcel could not be found.

A spokesman for Royal Mail confirmed that so far they had been unable to find the package containing Mick’s remains.

No disrespect, and sympathy to this Mans family, but should we really be accepting this kind of thing through regular mail?

I was thinking the same thing, if it was that important then the least they should've done was to send it SD but probably taken it themselves (car/train/plane).

Unfortunately for this poor woman , all the nasty demanding letters got through

If this guy liked complaining so much he won't mind me saying the ammount of times I've waited for a train that didn't turn up, was cancelled or went past without stopping I can say I've got little sympathy for them especially considering Recorded Delivery is for items of low value. What if he had been door stepped? Poor guy is all I can say.
