A POSTMAN stashed away thousands of letters and parcels for more than a year because he could not cope with his job.

Bradley Till, of Beech Avenue, Halstead, tried to shred ten bin bags of mail when his bosses found out what he was doing.

He dumped 2,347 letters and parcels in a recycling bin when his shredder broke.

Till was sentenced to five months in jail, suspended for two years, after he admitted three charges of delaying post, criminal damage and attempted criminal damage.

Till, a postman in Sudbury, Suffolk, stuffed the post in his vehicle, loft, locker and garage between February 2008 and September last year.

Kevin McCarthy, prosecuting, said bosses at Royal Mail searched Till’s vehicle on September 14, and found 292 undelivered parcels.

Two days later, 277 items were recovered from Till’s locker.

Chelmsford Crown Court yesterday heard it prompted the 37-year-old to get rid of ten bin bags full of mail.

The missing post was dated between February 4, 2008, and September 10, 2009. It has all been redelivered.

Lynne Shirley, mitigating, said Till had struggled to cope with work because he had split from his partner, his mother was diagnosed with cancer, and he had been prevented from seeing his children.

He also had financial problems, the court heard.

She said: “He had real difficulties in his personal life, and was in a job he perhaps should never have gone into.”

She said Till disliked the solitary job of a postman, and it had compounded his depression.

Till was sentenced to four months in jail for delaying post and one month in prison for criminal damage, to be suspended for two years.

He was also ordered to carry out 170 hours of unpaid work and pay Royal Mail £154.56 in compensation and £500 in costs.

If only they had introduced Park and Loop earlier then the whole sorry episode could have been avoided.
But looking at it from the other angle - if your partner in P&L is a tea leaf without you knowing, then you are obviously going to be suspected.
That's not going to be much fun.

have to say that the' solitary aspect' of the job is one that I enjoy,gives you time to think,listen to stuff etc,on the other hand ,when there was a family bereavement ,walking round on my own was perhaps not the best thing to do.too much time to think!!!

I agree, the best thing is being on your own for a while with only the radio and the occassional person to deal with, although I do listen to Radio 1 so Ferne Cotton can be a bit of a chore to get through (but not as much a Vernon Kay at the weekend and he never replied to my text ).
