Didn't they use pig s**t in that last movie to power everything? Seems like a good solution to me to the encroaching fuel crisis. Maybe if they could find a way of using bulls**t instead, then RM management would have a fantastic secondary income providing the world with enough of it to last the whole world until the sun blows up.

Brandson is not stupid. Why do you think he bought Necker Island? He know's it's comming.

On the negative side all your family and friends will have been killed by crazed motor-cycle gangs and Tina Turner will be the local law maker.
Now where did i leave the HCT.

Maybe not even they could save us but on that note I reckon there will come a day when customers will THANK us for D2D. That'll be they will be burning it to keep warm as the price of gas goes from rediculous to, 'we turn it on for birthdays and xams.'.

I am yet to see a coherent, logical and truthful reason as to why the phasing out of bicycles as a primary delivery method would be a) more economical, b) more functional, practical, flexible or sustainable, c) 'environmentally accountable'. RM have always seemed keen to gain PR plaudits from trialling 'innovative' alternatives in terms of biofuels etc and yet this whole 'park and loop' scenario seems such a laughable about-turn! Why aren't we up in arms about this? More importantly, why the hell aren't the CWU making waves about this within the media at such a time when environmental concerns seem to be more at the forefront of the public consciousness!!?
Perhaps one of our more 'enlightened' management trolls could explain this one as my lino was as perplexed as I am...

Packets,Tracked,Multiple D2Ds all "seen" as the future of Royal Mail and all largely incompatible with a bicycle.

You won't either as bicycle is by far the better option especially with peak oil comming.Grinder64 wrote:I am yet to see a coherent, logical and truthful reason as to why the phasing out of bicycles as a primary delivery method would be a) more economical, b) more functional, practical, flexible or sustainable, c) 'environmentally accountable'.
I suspect CWU are fully behind it based on the thought that operatives will no longer have falls from bikes esp. in ice and be off work, that weight will be kept in the van not on operatives shoulders, that vans can provide shelter for operatives, that it's safer for posties to work in pairs and be able to check up on one-another if one gets into trouble, that bag drops will go making savings that can go towards vehical costs, that travel times will in most cases be cut, that more parcels are comming and vans will enable more to be delivered by each postie in same time.Grinder64 wrote:More importantly, why the hell aren't the CWU making waves about this within the media at such a time when environmental concerns seem to be more at the forefront of the public consciousness!!?
There are arguments for and against. Remember we already have vans shutling out bags/posties/bikes around and doing large parcels anyway. But with the cost of fuel being 10X what it is today in 2015 this will prove to be a big mistake. As I said by then the world economy will be chaotic and we will all be let go anyway. We could always hang on to the vans and use them to escape to self-sufficiency paradise. Wales?

I read somewhere that if you realy want to reduce global warming we need to kill all the animal that eat grass, apparently they produce more methane on a daily basis than the whole human race does with all its cars, factories and fires.

True pegman but who farms the majority of these animals in such vast quantities.

what you fail to take into account are the thousands of postmen who use their own cars for delivering mail. what effect does that have on your arguements?,

Ignore methane, it has a half life that is vastly reduced compared to C02.
CO2 stays in the atmosphere longer so therefore catchs up with and OVERTAKES methane in impact.

opgpat wrote:For anyone not sure what Peak OIl theory is all about it's basically the idea that global oil production will follow the pattern show on an individual oil wells output graph. There you will see a 'Peak' on the graph where the well reaches it's maximum output before dropping off as quickly as it went up. As you can see from this chart, global peak might not be that far away (depends on possible new discoveries) and could be here already!
If you think about what will happen when total world oil production hits the peak and starts to decline, it's a bit scary. The price of oil will enter an ever increasing slope and within a few years petrol could concievably be 10times more expensive than now. Food will be too as every calorie of food need 4 calories of oil to produce and get to market. When we get to that situation the new fleet of vans will be next to worthless as will most of our jobs. Society will crumble and war over resources will be universal. PREPARE OR DIE!
Worrying developements Could this be our be our next Oil related conflict.

Argentina’s president issued a decree on Tuesday seeking to control all shipping to and from the Falkland Islands, escalating her fight with Britain over drilling for oil and gas in the South Atlantic.
Cristina Fernandez’s order doesn’t stop at shipping for the oil industry: It applies to any boat going to or from the islands, which Argentina refers to as the Malvinas.
Ms. Fernandez said that Britain occupies the archipelago illegitimately and that it has failed to comply with United Nations resolutions requiring negotiations on its future.

Argentina is now a democracy and the Argie public wouldn't support a conflcit. Plus their military now are too weak to take on the UK's high tech, highly invested armed forces.
Democratic governments since 1983 had straitened the military bugdet and disproved any major equipment purchases. Argentina military spending is one of the lowest of South America [6][7]

If we find oil there we'll need a bloody long pipeline won't we??
