Re: New Delivery Span!?
The whole idea is to wear you down so you either jump ship or you are sacked for throwing a wobbly. They can then employ casuals, agency staff temporarily until they have cleared the decks of all us lot who get higher hourly rate, then they will take them on full time on minimum pay, no pension, no sick pay, no union recognition, and then gladly sell the company off at a knock down price to the private sector and be paid mega bucks in back handers. This is why the regulator does absolutley nothing to deal with downstream access, because if you look who is on that board, it is the same people who are likely to be involved in privatisation. If it is privatised just watch the changes to downstream access then.

DGP1 wrote:My office had big duties put into it last year, 5 plus hours but they where classed as rurals so we couldn't do anything about it, we are now in the middle of a revision but the DOM has put in a new savings plan which will cut the office by another 200 hours, we can't cope now so I doubt we will cope in the future with these cuts (he said sequencing will be in by october but until then we just have to absorb).
BTW in the same meeting he said that a tray now only contains 122 letters
You got a new DOM Disgruntle yet??

Why worry about it ? You still only have to work your normal time.

You are right Madmax but I dont know what age you are, but there is absolutley no doubt that if we are now expected to walk most of the shift, there are going to be walking wounded with feet, leg, back, exhaustion problems, far greater than there is at the moment, and the current situation is bad enough.

Re: New Delivery Span!?
The CWU have not and will not agree to 5 hour spans etc.
However here is the issue and you can work it out for your office
If you dont have IPS sorting apart from packets and flats. As walk sequencing will do all your letters, and the second batch of work appox 40% of your work does not arrive in your office until as late as 10 in the morning. Plus if for every thousand letters on walk sequencing you save 19 mins on prep then in order to protect full time duties you have to look at a longer span and having door to door into workload.
Now in regards to longer spans the key must be that we remove bags from shoulders , remove cars from deliveries and whilst I am not convinced on the benefits of door to door as I dont believe you can match the loops right , Royal mail have invested 420 million pounds into this equipment and they believe that they work in most areas and use Haywards Heath as the sight where it works best. ( be intresting if someone from that office can enlighten us )
So you see if your indoor work is reducing from automation how else do you fill an 8 hour day ??????

dingo
Due to longs and shorts there are 9 hour days to fill out at my D.O
The answer is to your question, a cut in the working week!!!

Re: New Delivery Span!?
Dingo, many people work in sub sorting offices on industrial estates and linked to post offices in rural areas. There is no IPS machines in those workplaces, so can you tell me if there work is going to come in walk sequenced, then there walks will have to be extended way beyond 5 hours for them to maintain their full time hours. The problem with time out on the walk is not just getting weight off the shoulder. Most of us on bike rounds only have weight to carry when we replenish taking the bags from lock ups etc to the bike. The problem is that the older you get, fatigue starts creeping in long before the 3.5 hour current walks. Nobody should be expected to walk day in day out, five hours or more a day. If what you are saying is what our union representatives are currently agreeing to, then RM will have major problems to solve in the not too distant future, with people going off with spent out body parts. Whilst pay is important to all of us, the cwu must be made to strongly understand that our health and welfare far outways trying to maintain full time hours in which we are expected to cripple our bodies for a few more bob a week in order to make Royal Mail a profit at our expense, both financially and more importantly healthwise. I for one will vote NO for any increase in time out delivering, whatever method they choose.

Re: New Delivery Span!?
5 hour walks COULD come in with the shared vans. Basically you do 3 hours; come in and have a meal relief and then go out and do a 2 hour one. The fulltime element could be protected by them prepping other walks in the morning for the waysiders BEFORE prepping their own duties.Lincox wrote:Dingo, many people work in sub sorting offices on industrial estates and linked to post offices in rural areas. Re: New Delivery Span!?
Having a 30 or 40 minute meal relief isn,t going to take the pain out of weary legs and aching backs. Not only that if you have already walked for 3 hours and stop, you are going to stiffen up (no sexual inuendos please). This is a serious health and safety issue and needs to be taken seriously by our negotiators.

Re: New Delivery Span!?
WE have had 4hr WALKS for 49 weeks now and out of an office of 34 staff we currently have 7 on light duties because they have been off with back problems , knee problems etc. In my 10 years at this office i have never known a situation like this and can't help feeling that it must be associated with the longer deliveries.Lincox wrote:You are right Madmax but I dont know what age you are, but there is absolutley no doubt that if we are now expected to walk most of the shift, there are going to be walking wounded with feet, leg, back, exhaustion problems, far greater than there is at the moment, and the current situation is bad enough.

Re: New Delivery Span!?
I think HJ4K your DO is proving the poiint and that is on 4 hour walks. Add another hour on and the percentage rate will increase dramatically.
