Learning centre at Hereford's Royal Mail named after long-serving postie, Peter Mayne

A NEW learning centre at Royal Mail in Hereford has been named after a popular postman.

Peter Mayne was a familiar sight in Weobley, where he delivered letters for 34 years before switching to Brilley.

He completed 43 years as a working postman and also chaired the Hereford and Worcester Postman’s Union.

“I am a bit speechless that my name is on the wall but I am very proud,” said Mr Mayne.

“It’s not something I would ever have imagined happening because I was always in confrontation with the Post Office on behalf of the membership.

“We have come a long way since those days and we have built a lot of bridges.”

Mr Mayne started his career as a messenger boy in Hereford in 1961.

He still lives in Hereford but now works as a full-time union representative with the Communication Workers Friendly Society.

The Peter Mayne Learning Centre has been set up at Royal Mail’s Hereford delivery office in Station Approach.

“This is being used by postal workers working at this site and tutors provided by Worcester College of Technology,”

explained Robert Smith, a joint lead union representative for Hereford and Worcester.

“People are always a bit worried about learning in a college environment because they associate it with younger people.

“But this will give Royal Mail staff an opportunity to take nationally recognised courses in a comfortable environment and have support from tutors in Worcester.”

Mr Mayne has also created a postal museum inside the new learning centre and among the items showcased is an Imperial Service Medal owned by the late chief inspector of Hereford sorting office, Les Bevan.
