A former Dereham postman on Tuesday admitted stealing hundreds of pounds from mail, including children's birthday cards, to fund his gambling habit.
Magistrates at Swaffham heard that Adam Allenden, 35, had abused his position of trust working in Dereham delivery office to open more than 100 packages, steal about £270 and burn 80 packages to cover his tracks.
Two of his victims, Stacey Thompson and Joshua Kenning, were children, whose money he took from their birthday cards.
Allenden, of Parkers Close in Wymondham, pleaded guilty to theft of an unknown number of postal packets and also to burning an unknown number of packets between April 1 and April 12 last year, as well as theft of £35 from three postal packets and opening packets on April 12 last year.
Hugh Cauthery, prosecuting, said that Allenden, who worked at the delivery office for about three-and-a-half years, claimed he was motivated to steal the money by a gambling habit.
He said: “These offences represent a serious breach of trust. In all cases relating to the postal system there is an attack on the integrity of that system and the public confidence in it.â€

It would not surprise me if this was the case. The Firm must look good and appear to tick all the boxes even if Mr Jones does get his mail stolen.kinmad4it wrote:But in today's sandal wearing society wouldn't it be classed as discrimination not giving someone a job because of a criminal record.

Couldn't agree more. Not that I condone stealing. But losing your job and more importantly, your liberty, for a few hundred quid is pretty bloody stupid to say the least. But being that stupid he deserves everything they throw at him.evilc wrote:If I were going to steal money from Royal Mail I would make sure there was more than £270 involved.

Why, when they can flood the business with cheap labour from Britain once they've completed their divide and rule tactics and got worker against worker?cruisey wrote:This will happen all the more with more part timers coming into the business. This is my argument of cost cutting by employing cheaper labour, most of the time to get someone who's trustworthy and honest you have to pay them a half decent wage with half decent conditions. Have RM not considered that If they go ahead with ALL their changes they will lose good honest posties by the shedload, ONLY to be replaced by half brained numptys who dont care about the job or organised gangs form abroad who are in it for corruption..I'm pissed off by the fact RM are putting costs before quality of service time and time again. I'm proud of being a postie by the mere fact its a trustworthy occupation like police etc.. But the public are getting aware of the fact that there is increasing theft and corruption within the business, giving good honest posties like us a bad name and its ALL RM's fault for not doing the checks!...Chop there Fecking fingers off I say..That'll stop em.. ps also bring back Hanging, The cane..Borstal ...National service ...Ohh don't get me started..lol
