The power cut actually started at approx 2310. Power was reinstated externally (EDF)at approx 0200. However, there was a problem in the Royal Mail building and engineers couldn't get the whole of the office live and only emergency lighting worked from 0200 on. There is usually independent emergency back up power but it failed on this occasion.
Staff who's started work at 2200 were made to sit in the canteen and lounge area idle whilst the engineers tried to get the office and machinery powered up again. The lights, heating, drinking, eating and leisure facilities were all out. Vehicles couldn't get in or out of the building as the barriers did not function, however, staff were sent outside to put the barriers up permanently half way through the night.
Finally, management let staff go at 0545 having done nothing all night.
