Inward mails are just mails for the PO postcode area which POMC serves, Outward mails all letter box collections will go to SOMC with Chi & Bognor collections going to Gatwick and IOW and PO City going to SOMC.

It looks like Pompey mail centre's days are numbered, 2C packets off to SOMC soon as well I think, people say the IOW is a problem, if RM want to make it happen they will!

The ferry to the IOW from Lymington is bigger now so possibly a 600 could be sent across the ferry from SO MC.

Thanks Stuart 6!

SpacePhoenix, 600s and Logistics 17 tonne vehicles are already used to bring 2c mail from IOW during the day and transport all mail to IOW at night. The Hovercraft is only used from early afternoon until about 7:30pm and carries 1c/specials. As POMC is only 10 minutes drive from the Hovercraft terminal there is time for the last of the 1c and specials to be processed in time for the final dispatch. Doubt if this could be done anywhere else without changing IOW last collection times.

Another thing that has been overlooked on this thread is that POMC mailyard is just far too small to cope with the number of vehicles that have to access it, particularly those from logistics. All in all it has very little going for it.

One thing it apparently has going for it is that RM need a depot in the middle of Portsmouth (as a DO, if nothing else) and as Portsmouth is/was the most densely populated city in Western Europe, finding new premises would be very expensive if not impossible. More so, as RM purchasing work at a snail's pace, and anything available would be long gone by the time they got around to putting in an offer.

That said, there's no mention of PO on the iLSM list.......

So whats to stop RM selling the whole building, and leasing 1 or 2 floors to use as a DO then?
same as it ever was...

Yes it is. PO mail centre is all in one: PO Crown Office, DO, MC also has a few other things based their including PAF AMU, IB and conference facilities. But I agree the yard is woefully inadequate as Ive mentioned earlier. I cant see how they can close it though as SO and PO are enormous geographical areas and dont forget the new towns emerging from Fareham/Whiteley etc...

According to the AA travel planner it would only take about 24mins (start point Southampon Airport to Portsmouth) so they could move PO's work to SO and just adjust duty times. Stuff outside of Portsmouth could bypass it. Stuff for the IOW could still use the hovercraft but with collection times adjusted.

Can PO MC's yard handle the double-deck artics?

24 minutes possible on nights with no traffic, but impossible with current daily traffic conditions in a speed-limited vehicle.

That defiantly goes against it for PO MC. I know that we send some of the stuff we send to PO via SO MC, would have to check if we sent it all via SO MC but if that is so, then PO MC could be downgraded.

Apart from doing all PO's 2c mech, there is a mailing house called Gemalto which prints Cashcards for most of the major banks which used to be handled by PO as they are based in Fareham, just outside PO,but the contract is now handled by SO MC.It is 2c AND 1c PPI mech,i think it was PO's largest bulk poster,so what does that tell youabout PO's future as a MC? :cuppa

At least PO still has the driving duty for Gemalto.
