Amid the excitement over Adam Crozier’s appointment as ITV’s new chief executive, less has been said of Royal Mail, which he will shortly leave at a critical juncture. Talks with the Communication Workers Union, over changes to working practices, are said to be going well.

But Royal Mail’s board will still want a successor named by the general election — and especially if, as is rumoured, an incoming Conservative administration revives Lord Mandelson’s part-privatisation programme for the business. Headhunters are yet to be appointed. But it seems the internal candidates — Ian Duncan, the group finance director, and Mark Higson, head of the letters division — may be overlooked. So who could it be? Here are some suggestions: Tony Douglas, the talented former chief operating officer at Laing O’Rourke, who has plenty of experience in a variety of industries; Guy Buswell, the chief executive of rival UK Mail; or — a wild card, this — Kate Swann.

As chief executive of WH Smith, she knows Royal Mail well through a partnership with the Post Office and, having turned around Smiths, would surely welcome a big new challenge. There are few bigger.

Presumably this is a reference to Pete Townshend, who was a) never charged with any offence b) had 14 computers in his house examined (some used for composition/recording and some for personal use) and not one of them contained any images of children, let alone 'kiddie porn' and c) when the first details of the police investigation were circulating, voluntarily went to the police and said it was possible he may have visited one of the sites involved whilst researching for his autobiography, in regard to the abuse he says he himself suffered as a child. He has also been actively involved with charities in the past which deal with abused children, after discovering that a close (female) friend of his had suffered abuse as a child (I'm a little hazy now on the details, as this was at the end of the 90's, but I think she might have committed suicide)

The child abuse he says he may have suffered was not something he actually remembered but a result of "recovered memory" - a dubious and to some largely discredited load of psychobabble.
And as for the "research" he says he was undertaking - to what did it ever lead?

So you are acknowledging that his motives for going there ("to fight against something you have to know what is out there") were foolish and naive maybe, but not for reasons which are normally what bring Paedophiles to such sites. He also said, and this was confimed by the police, hence why no charges were raised against him, that he only paid $4 to look at the outer 'Index' site, and did not go any further into the content of the site

The 'research' he was undertaking was for the autobiography he was compiling - a project which he shelved indefinately after all the furore ( to my disappointment, though understanding, as I had sent him some material on the Who,from the 1960's, prior to all this)

Gary Glitter was a different matter-his PC contained thousands of vile images. Michael Jackson is the proof that if you have enough money you can cover up anything
