It wasn't total mail they were interested in as such, but the statistical variation between walks.
but surely that will change from week to week?
We will have to wait and see the results but probably not greatly IMHO.
There may be monthly magazines, such as licensee stuff, that would have got missed but overall I doubt it will be an enormous difference.
Anyone who has worked on IPS for a year would be able to tell you which walk gets an average amount of mail, which walks are light and which are heavy. That doesn't change week to week.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

but surley that will change from week to week?
it does, especially with areas with council, social housing etc and bulk deliveries
then you have area specific mailings
however there are always duties that get less/more mail in the majority of times
Been counting in ours to no sky mags they were coming in friday night ,saturday morning, one way of thinking about it if you can't compleat your delivery's on a light mail week whats the chances of doing it when it is heavy?,what i have found out is that they did not like the result's in our office,me think's that some body had not been altogether honest as there was a little more than they had as a figure!
it was to do with the IWT, and it wasnt every item of mail to be counted, was just a sample, 500 of ips, 500 of flats, 100 packets (from an average size DO) and they lifted the walksort distribution from the daily figures, its so they can calculate roughly how much "free time" they have indoors, ie duty A takes two hours to sort on average as it has 2000 items of mail where duty B only takes an hour due to 1000 items of mail, so we can squeeze an other part time duty in and get duty holder of Duty B to sort Duty C as well
lainey wrote:it cant be to do with variation of mail in walks it was ips mail that was being counted
That's precisely why it was to do with variation.
They know how much mail comes to your walk directly, they don't know the variation between walks of mail sorted at IPS.
Now they think they do.
It's a very blunt tool - but as it was dreamed up by a manager what else would you expect?

Has any body had the packet count where it's decision time to what will go through a letter box and what wont?
I can tell you it's very funny because then they come and ask you and then you go through it and chuck all the stuff out that still wont go through a box
