Trial date set after Royal Mail death

A trial following the death of Whitley Royal Mail worker Colin Smith is due to take place at Reading Crown Court next month.

Royal Mail and lorry driver Ian Wheeler appeared at Reading Crown Court on Friday, where arrangements for the trial were discussed.

Both Wheeler and Royal Mail deny charges of health and safety breaches linked to failing to carry out their duties properly.

Mr Smith, 58, of Basingstoke Road, died at the company’s depot in Langley, near Slough, in October 2006.

He had been fatally crushed by a lorry.

Royal Mail Group Ltd and Wheeler, 41, from Market Road, Bracknell, who face four counts between them, are due to appear in the dock on Monday, February 22.

In the meantime Wheeler is on unconditional bail.

A Prohibition Notice was served on Royal Mail at Seacroft Delivery Office in Leeds over Workplace Transport safety standards following an accident when another member of the public was injured

- Used to work at a call centre about 100 yards from there - I am not surprised an accident happened to be honest as the entrance exit for the vans and wagons was immediately next to the collection office. The vehicles IIRC have a blind corner to approach and the pedestrians had no path and were also blind to vehicles approaching. What cannot be seen clearly from this pic I got from Google Maps is that the entrance is under a overhang, the white smaller building is the overhang of which only about 1/2 IIRC (its a few years ago since I was there) forms an office the rest is open one 1 side.

Embarrasingly for RM one of the vans in the picture looks as though its parked in the no parking area as well
