Considering the Vauxhall Vivaro is identical to a Renault Trafic and a Nissan, I'd be very surprised if they're built here...

On the subject of radios in vans, I've been around long enough to remember drivers being chuffed when vans first were fitted with a radio. Probably only MW/LW though...

I still think vynl beats CDs for sound quality, but i must admit it is a bit of a pain having to keep putting the arm back on the LP when driving along :d'oh!

Their all built in Luton. I think its good that Royal Mail tends to buy vans made In Britain, even the LDVs which lets be honest, are awful to drive and very unreliable.

My 2008 combo has just the cassette radio but the radio part is RDS and good enough for me. I ve not drove a Bippa on the road yet but only moved one around the yard but was impressed by the kit esp the leccy windows which makes the passenger side easier to drop when misted up.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

I wasn't aware of that, I assumed they were built abroad. Fair play RM... :Applause

I don't think the Maxus is too bad to drive - certainly a significant step forwards from the Convoy and Pilot! Reliability is shocking though, as you say. They keep our office mechanic busy anyway! :Boo hoo!

I noticed the other day that we've still got a 53 reg Pilot. It's quite a big office with I would think 40-50 vans (never counted!). The Pilot sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the Maxus' and Transits!

Is there an age/mileage cut off point for when a van is replaced, we have a few rot boxes in our DO that are on their last legs.

Use to be now i think they just keep them till they cant go anymore, its one of their plans on saving money, how silly if you run vans like we do across all the different areas like we do then after 5 years you should be looking at replacement before it costs you more money.

So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

Until recently, it seemed that the smaller vans (Combos etc) were replaced every 3 years, and the larger (LDVs / Transits) every 5. I always assumed it was because the re-sale value on the smaller vans was better at 3 years than 5, whereas the bigger ones, particularly crew buses, were not so sought after on the second hand market, so were kept longer. This is just my supposition, I've no idea if that was the reason.

Certainly, in our office, we had some X and Y plate Convoys brand new in 2001, which were replaced by the Maxus in 2006, so the theory above seems to work in this case. But as I said on another post, there is a 53 reg Pilot in our office, which must now be getting towards 7 years old. We've also got a 55 reg Maxus (one of the first), so it'll be interesting to see if that is replaced later this year.

I always think that if you were to purchase an ex-Royal Mail van, rather than look at the mileage, which depending what it's been used for won't necessarily be that high, you need to consider that it's probably been in use for probably 5 or 6 hours a day, all stop-start! They could do with an aircraft style 'engine hours' log!

We've a couple of Combos approaching 5 years old and others well over 3 years old, I think they only replace them in my office if they cost too much to repair rather than replace.
