Like Stourport Delivery Office we are a small office only 2 miles from Wolverhampton city centre,
we have around 60 staff who work hard and well together.

Like our brothers in Stourport we have been threatened with closure and moving us into Tipton.

As Stourport as already said the reason for the move is down to cost and nothing else, Royal Mail do not care about its staff or its customers
they definitely do not care about the environment as half of our office use cycles and if made to move i can not see anyone cycling a 10mile trip to and from delivery, so transport will have to be used.

The ironic part of this is that Pat Mcfadden is our MP however he has no interest with reference to the closure, when he was challenged last week
he replied with "don't worry no one will lose their job"

What the hell does Pat Mcfadden think we residents of Bilston elected him for? He should pull out all the stops to save Bilston delivery office as it has served Bilston residents well over many years. Fight for what the people of Bilston want Mr Mcfadden -- THAT'S YOUR BLOODY JOB!

Royal Mail’s delivery office in Bilston is earmarked for closure, it was claimed today. Around 45 people are based in the office in Hall Street.

A meeting was being held this afternoon between staff, MPs and councillors at Springvale Social Club, in Millfields Road, over the future of the branch.

Campaigners have already launched a petition to pledge their support for keeping the office open.

Volunteers handed out 500 leaflets to shoppers in the area informing them of the move, while a Facebook group opposing the closure today has almost 900 members.

Gary Perry, Wolverhampton branch secretary of the Communications Workers Union, said postmen and women have been told they will have to travel four miles to Tipton to sort the mail and then return to Bilston to make their deliveries. “Workers were told about the closure from their managers,” he said. “There are real fears because every time Royal Mail carries out so-called downsizing, people lose their jobs.

“They’ve been told they will be relocated to Tipton but that will affect everybody living in Bilston.

“Their post will arrive even later than it already does and residents will have to travel to Tipton to collect items which can’t be delivered. If they keep their jobs, staff will also have much longer journeys every day.” Ken Wood, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Wolverhampton South East, has pledged his support for the campaign to save the office open.

After helping to collect 100 signatures to kickstart the petition, he said: “The response from the residents of Bilston has been superb with everyone either signing our petition or taking a leaflet to sign and return to us.”

Councillor Gill Fellows, Conservative representative for Bilston North, said the plans were a further loss to residents following the closure of Villiers Post Office as part of national cutbacks in 2008.

But Royal Mail spokeswoman Susan Dakin today declined to confirm or deny the closure, saying that at present there were no “firm plans” for the office. She said: “We constantly review the operational efficiency and commercial practicality of all our units.

“However, at present, we have no firm plans regarding Bilston Delivery Office.”

Postman Paul Southall, who founded the Facebook group, said: “If the premises that currently house our sorting office are no longer financially viable, why haven’t Royal Mail chosen to use one of the empty factory units in Bilston itself?

“Do they feel it is more viable to have to bus staff around, pay compensation, pay travel expenses, and arrange mail drop-offs as well as safe bike storage?

“With the inevitable expansion in the area, Bilston Urban Village for one, how long before we have to move again?”

Campaigners turn out for post office

More than 100 campaigners attended a meeting to oppose the feared closure of Royal Mail’s Bilston delivery office.

Supporters turned out in force at Springvale Social Club, in Millfields Road, amid claims the Hall Street facility is earmarked for closure.

About 45 people work at the office and it is believed that their roles will be transferred to the Tipton office, which is four miles away, if the move goes ahead.

Gary Perry, Wolverhampton branch secretary of the Communications Workers Union, added: “Staff have been told the closure is because of cost- cutting and because the Bilston office isn’t viable anymore.

“Nationally the CWU is in talks with Royal Mail about improving the quality of services but shutting this delivery office will mean that residents, business and staff suffer.” Councillor Phil Page, Labour representative for Bilston North, said: “The meeting was really well attended and there is a lot of strong feeling among residents.

“A lot of people in Bilston don’t drive and to make them travel to Tipton to pick up parcels makes no sense.”

Royal Mail today maintained it has no “firm plans” for the Bilston facility.

Pat McFadden, MP for Wolverhampton South East, said: “I have spoken to Royal Mail and been assured no decision has been taken as yet.”
